IT is with great pride that Umkomaas Golf Club (UGC) congratulates Garth Mulroy on capturing his USA PGA tour card and gaining the right to play in tournaments in the States.

After the BMW PGA championships of a couple of weeks ago, Garth played in the qualifier for the PGA and managed to earn his place to play in America.

This will mean that, back home in South Africa, golfers will be watching in the wee hours of the morning, which is so different to when he was playing on the European circuit where the time difference was more often than not, minimal. Golfers who have been following UGC’s ‘boys’ over the years will be thrilled at the prospect of seeing Garth, along with Tim when he starts playing again, back on the courses in these PGA tournaments. Well done, Garth, you have earned your stripes at last.

Last Monday, Umkomaas hosted the senior women championships based on the medal format, on a beautiful day which augured well for good golf. The silver division was won by the South Coast regional president, Brenda Morgan from Toti Golf Club and the bronze division was won by UGC’s own Lesa Vergottini with the runner-up being woman captain, Bryony Rogers. Congrats to all the women who played, especially the winners – well done all.

Wednesday’s competition was the normal individual stableford and this week it was Fred Welch’s turn to take the first prize with 42 solid points, counting out Dave Kemp into second spot also with 42 points. In third place was Piet Vermaak who managed 38 points and in fourth place, Hans Beuthe with 37 points.

Saturday was the fifth round of the alliance league, played in magnificent weather without even a breath of wind. Visitors were warmly welcomed at prize-giving by club captain, Peter Toward and it was the team of ‘Little Red Riding Hoods’ – Bryony Rogers, Adrian Rogers, Bing Opie and Denise Nell who snatched victory from the ‘Swingers’ – Annette Gillett, Rob Finlay, Andy Davidge and John Gillett and put them soundly into second place on a count out, both teams with 93 points. In third spot this month was the team of the ‘Blue Brothers’ – Leven Chetty, Saga Reddy, Nelson Moonsamy and Devlyn Fraser with 92 points who in turn counted out the ‘Die Hards’ – Simon van den Bosch, Ken Koster, Dave Kemp and Rob Mathias into fourth place. As can be seen from the results, the competition is very close and has been well fought for over the last five months. Fred Welch took home the jackpot with his 11 points and the hidden birdie was shared between Saga Reddy, Devlyn Fraser, Mike Cromhout and Andy Davidge found on the sixth hole. The attendance draw was scooped up by Ken Koster and Eddie, the barman, won the football sweep. Well done to all.
