Singles competitions well underway at ABC

Keep checking the board for carded games, and players who lose in their singles games, please be available to mark your opponent’s next round.

IN the women’s open singles at Amanzimtoti Bowling Club (ABC), well done to Marie van der Walt who had a very good win against Doreen Salmond.

Also successful were Jane Coetzee who played Maxien Barnes; Amanda Ninow beat Linda McGregor; Val de Kok defeated Nita Meumann; in a close game Jackie Holdrick prevailed over Talla Stephens-Viviers; Pam Chalder-Royle beat Denise Bingham by one shot; and Julie Sutherland overcame Mardi Dovale.

In a second round game, Amanda Ninow was up 14-7 against Val de Kok after 11 ends, but the formidable Val can never be discounted and came back strongly to win 21-20 in the 19th end, well done to both.

In the women’s senior singles, Margaret van Belkum had a strong win against Jacqui Fouché; Nita Meumann beat Heather Brown; Val de Kok defeated Maxien Barnes; Robyn Hutton won over Marie van der Walt; and Pam Chalder-Royle overcame Linda McGregor in a marathon game of 28 ends. In the Mixed Pairs, Brad Cox and Pam Chalder-Royle got the better of Glen Scorgie and Jackie Holdrick.

In the men’s Scroungers, the winner was Ian Crouch. Runner-up was Brad Cox and in third place was Dave Kemp. Andrew Walker won plate A, and Jeff van Belkum won plate B. The next Scroungers will be on 5 June.

At TGIF, Steve Conlon’s number came up in the members’ draw but as he was not present, next week’s draw is worth R250. Pete Shepard won the 100 board. In the key draw, Lynda Myrtle and Hu Barber won the lucky number, however to no avail as their key did not fit. Next week’s draw will be worth R4,420, so buy tickets early.

In the men’s open singles Glen Scorgie overcame Brad Cox. There were some strong wins with Vince Phaal beating Martin Birch, and Mike Roberts getting the better of Shawn Sutherland; in other results Lofty van Tonder defeated Kokkie de Kock; Adie Fuller beat Jeff van Belkum; Andy McDonald overcame Peter Barnes; Ian Crouch won over Andrew Pearce; Trevor Zulch got the better of Wessie van der Westhuizen; and Colin Coetzee beat Bobby Henderson.

The winners of Big Chicks were Ian Crouch, Lofty van Tonder, Julie Sutherland and Mickey Roche; in second place were Peter Labuschagne, Neil Oberholzer, Elsie Walker and Tokkie de Kock; and coming third were Willem Pelser, Alec Stirzaker, Jenny Delport and Jackie Holdrick. The first session went to Greg McLeod, Doug and Lynn Joubert and Mike Pitchers; the second session was won by Glen Scorgie, Terry Morgan, Yvonne Hooper and Ian Scorgie; Pam Chalder-Royle, Leonie Mills, Betty Sawyer and Shawn Sutherland won the 13th prize; and the most bowls was won by Sean and Robbie Roberts, Martinus Botha and Gladys Hughes. The 100 board winners were Vince Marriott, Talla and Lesley, and Pete Callaghan. Thanks to the generous sponsors, Gladys Hughes, Brian Pascoe and Jerry Gertzen, as well as bar and kitchen staff.

Well done to Duncan Wright, Ian Shearer, Ken Leech and Denny Denysschen playing for Picardy Bazooka, who won the Jan Smuts trophy in the four-day Moths national tournament at Parkhill and Northlands. Belated thanks go to Hennie van der Poel (WP) for last week’s report on the Margate tournament.

Keep checking the board for carded games, and players who lose in their singles games must be available to mark their opponent’s next round. Friday, 22 May is mixed 2-4-2, and Sunday, 24 May is mutton. Forms are on the board for the annual women’s fours winter tournament played on 11 and 12 June. Put in your teams as soon as possible.

Many happy returns are sent this week to Glen Scorgie, Doug Walton, Jean Snyman, Leo Verwijk and Bill Streek. Good health and good bowling is wished to all members.

The club was saddened to hear of the sudden death of Doug Walton’s wife, Pam. Condolences are sent to Doug and family and friends.
