THE Port Natal Oppenheimer mixed pairs championships, which started at Umbogintwini Bowling Club in 1935, kicked off at about 29 clubs all around the region last weekend.

It is one of the most popular Port Natal competitions, and is now sponsored by Amanzimtoti Bowling Club.

Some 202 teams from as far away as Umhlali and Hillcrest entered, and the eventual winners of the competition will represent the region in the SA championships in June. ABC entered 26 teams, and six won their sections and will proceed to the knock-out rounds which begin on Sunday, 19 April. The successful teams were Peter Callaghan and Robyn Hutton; Greg McLeod and Marion Crouch; Heather Brown and Mike Pitchers; Alec and Nicky Stirzaker; Barry Simpson and Mardi Dovale, and Adie Fuller and Julie Sutherland. Well done to all of you.

Three honours board games were played over the weekend. In women’s handicap singles Tokkie de Kock lost to Robyn Hutton, and Jeanne Alexander lost to Nita Meumann. In nominated pairs Jane Coetzee and Denise Bingham beat Stella Erasmus and Maggie Robertson. Thanks go to Marion Crouch for standing in as women’s competition secretary for the last few weeks.

In the men’s inter-club league, in the first division, Toti A lost 0-7 to Durban A. In second division, Toti B beat 5-2 Hillcrest B, while the third division saw Toti C lose 5-2 to Wanderers B. The fifth division saw Toti D lose 0-5 to Parkhill B. Sixth division results saw Toti E beat Durban Wanderers D 3-2. In the seventh division, Toti F lost 0-5 to Woodlands A and the eighth division saw Toti G lose 0-5 to Westville CC’s D side.

In the women’s midweek league, Mardi Dovale’s team in section four lost their game this week. However Doreen Salmond’s team in section five won and are in the lead on a count-out going into the final round. So next week’s game will be the decider.

The Wynn Cup women’s inter-club league starts on Saturday, 18 April with four Toti squads entered, so good bowling to all teams playing this weekend, whether in the Oppenheimer or district leagues.

Ian Crouch was named member of the month at TGIF, in recognition of his work and hours spent in helping to maintain the green-keeping equipment. The 100 board at TGIF was won by Al McGregor, and the attendance draw by Alec Stirzaker, so the pot returns to R100 next Friday. Al McGregor’s name was drawn for a second time that night in the key draw, but unfortunately his key didn’t fit, so that pot rises to about R2,600. Birthday greetings go to Yvonne Hooper, Keith Berry and Jeanne Alexander, and best wishes to all who are sick.
