Keen competition at ABC’s Easter fives tournament

Note that men’s Scroungers returns to the greens again on Friday, 10 April.

THE Easter weekend saw the annual Easter fives tournament being played at Amanzimtoti Bowling Club.

Twelve teams of five played trips and pairs over two days.

The competitive spirit was high, and some excellent games were played in the cool weather. First on a count out was the team of Glen Scorgie, Liz Morgan-Davies, Mickey Roche, Alan McGregor and Peter Snyman; Peter Callaghan, Adie Fuller, Tokkie de Kock, Michelle Pitchers and Trevor Zulch came in second, and Marion Crouch, Pam Chalder-Royle, Barry Buckland, Adrienne Robbins and Martin Birch won third place.

The fives tournament also had prizes for winners of each session, and first session was won by Coy Schrauwen, Nita Meumann, Leon van Rensburg, Leonie Mills and Bernie Bretherton; second session by Heather Brown, Mardi Dovale, Amanda Ninow, Keith Berry and Johan (Wessie) van der Westhuizen; third session by Ian Crouch, Herbie Hofmann, Val de Kok, Margaret van Belkum and Karen Shepherd; and fourth session by Gerald Chalder-Royle, Duncan Wright, Martin Young, Boet Els and Kokkie de Kock.

Despite the rain that curtailed the last few ends of the competition, everyone was in party mood after the game and let their hair down to the bouncing music of DJ Doug Joubert. Mike Burns’ luck was definitely in, as he won the 100 board both days. Thanks go to the generous sponsors of the fives competition: Bidvest Van Rental, Memories Restaurant, Philips Financial Services and the Picardy Bazooka Shell Hole, and to the club’s kitchen, bar and grounds staff who worked hard behind the scenes.

  • Winners of the men’s monthly trips competition were Glen Scorgie, Peter Callaghan and Mickey Roche.
  • Second was Ian Crouch, Willem Pelzer and Brian Crause; and in
  • third place by a count-out was Guelfo Cobianchi, Herbie Hofmann and Ben Venter;
  • Al McGregor, Jeff van Belkum and Peter Snyman won the 13th prize; and
  • Doug Walton, Keith Berry and Denny Denysschen won the continental prize.

In women’s mid-week league Mardi Dovale’s team lost their third round game in section four, while Doreen Salmond’s team had a good win at home in section five. Check the notice board for the carded competitions on Saturday, 11 April, and good bowling to all teams playing in the Oppenheimer on Sunday, 12 April.

Note that men’s Scroungers returns to the greens again on Friday, 10 April.
