WELL done to all Umkomaas Golf Club’s (UGC) women who competed in the KZN championships last weekend.

Some did better than others, with varying results.

Umkomaas can always depend on the women to shine – and shine they did. Congrats and well done – the club is very proud of you all.

Both UGC’s PGA boys are on the injured list at the moment. The club wishes them both a very speedy recovery to get back to doing what they do best. Tim recently had an elbow operation and by all accounts is well on the mend. Garth has a recurring back problem but hopefully they’ll both be back on the circuit in the not too distant future.

Wednesday welcomed a member from Observatory Golf Club, Derek du Preez to the club and individual stableford competition. Taking first prize this week was Barrie Taylor on 41 followed very closely by Fred Welch in second spot with 40 points. Jimmy Pickavance took home the third prize on offer with 38 points.

On Saturday the competition was a three ball waltzing alliance which was great fun, trying to keep track of the ‘steps’ in waltz-time. It was nice to see one of UGC’s overseas members joining this week’s fun competition, a hearty welcome was extended to Dietmar Schatz from Austria as well as local visitors, Renzo Avellini and Jason Reddy by club captain, Peter Toward at prize giving. The team with the most successful waltzers was Leven Chetty, Saga Reddy and Jason Reddy with 83 points and in second place were Bruna Scarpa, Franco Scarpa and Gianni Ioppo with 79 points. The jackpot was won by Jason Reddy on 12 points but the hidden birdie is still lost on the 7th hole. All the two clubs were on the fourth hole this week – Devlyn Fraser, Leven Chetty, Barrie Taylor, Jimmy Pickavance and Michelle van der Merwe. Dave Mulroy won the draw in the ‘non-skills department’ – the attendance draw with Adele Kruger winning the football sweep with Hartlepool United FC.

Next Saturday, 4 April is the Halfway Toyota monthly medal competition, which is open to both women and the men with the mixed ‘three Jacks and a Jill’ competition on Sunday, 5 April. There will also be social golf on Sunday but why not have some fun in the mixed competition? There will be loads of prizes on offer with a few side competitions and a bring and braai afterwards. Even non-golfers can join in the fun and the braai.

The ‘Gerries’ play early on Tuesdays and Fridays at around 6.45am. Be at the club at 6.30am to get the special green fee rate, not forgetting that six pin is on Friday afternoons at around 3pm. There is always something to nibble on such as rolls with a braai-ed whatever inside afterwards. Great fun and very sociable.

A reminder to all that there are only a couple of tickets left in the ‘progressive dinner’ happening on 18 April, after the fourth round of the Alliance league competition in the afternoon. Contact Annette Gillett on 082-927-5013 about the dinner.

Ahead of the upcoming Easter weekend, everyone is wished a happy Easter – enjoy your families when they arrive and drive carefully when out and about.
