Bromfield one to watch in swimming

Michael's dream is to make the Olympics swimming team in 2020.

A young Toti swimmer is one to watch for the future after excelling in the pool this season.

Michael Bromfield (13), a grade 8 pupil at Westville Boys High School, was recently crowned his school’s victor ludorum after wins in the individual medley, freestyle, backstroke and butterfly, and a second place in breaststroke.

“It was cool to be awarded the victor ludorum, I was excited,” said Michael, who was presented with the trophy by two of his swimming heroes, Chad le Clos and Chad Ho. “I was thrilled to meet two South African swimming legends and they are swimmers I look up to very much.”

Michael started swimming at a young age. “When I started doing well in every gala and kept on improving, I realised this is a sport I can do well in. I’ve always had a passion for swimming.”

Michael excels in his favourite strokes, butterfly and freestyle. “Before those races, I get amped. Swimming those strokes gives me a rush.”

He was coached by Maryna Henning of Tigerfish Aquatics until November and is now under the guidance of Petro Nortje of Westville Swimming Club.

At the level 2 champs in Sasolburg, he claimed gold, silver and two bronze, gold at the TYR champs, and gold, silver and bronze at the Durban premier champs to prove he is a force to be reckoned with in the pool.

“The glory for my success goes to God. And lots of hard work.

My two favourite mottos from (Australian swimming sensation) Michael Phelps are: “If you want to be the best, you have to do things that other people aren’t willing to do” and “Don’t put a limit on anything. The more you dream, the further you get.”

Michael’s dream is to make the Olympics swimming team in 2020. “Dedication to swimming, keep focusing on the goal, and staying on the path to my dream will hopefully make this a reality.”

For now though, the former Athlone Park Primary School pupil is focused on the level 3 champs in Cape Town next year and the Commonwealth Games in 2018.”
