TOTI Athletics Club committee is hard at work as the club prepares of host the popular Dick King 21km run and 15km walk.

The race gets its name from the epic ride of Dick King which covered more than 950km in 10 days as the frontiersman raced from Port Natal to Grahamstown.

The Dick King half marathon takes place on 29 March.

Entry fee for licensed runners is R90 and the walkers R80. Temporary licences are available with the collection of entries on 28 March at Amanzimtoti beachfront from 10am to 4pm and Sunday from 4.30pm.

Runners are reminded that this is strictly a pre-entry event and no entries will be taken on the day. T-shirts will be given to the first 1,000 pre-entries only. Runners can enter at www.totiac.co.za For race enquiries, call Des on 082-808-0348 or Thobikile on 078-474-0342. The club is looking for any corporate sponsorship for items for the runners’ goodie bags, such as soaps, cream, magazines, sweets or energy drinks.

The Dick King route starts at Toti main beach, through Doonside, Warner Beach and Illovo. Runners return on the same route, finishing on Toti main beach.

Rules for doing quality running workouts: If you’re a new runner or returning from injury, all runners should wait to speed up or add intervals until they can handle their workouts. For warm up, the faster the workout, the more thorough the warm up needs to be. Wear a watch with a lap function so you can record your splits. Recover faster: Runs tax your body so take at least one easy or rest day between hard efforts to recover.

The club wishes all our runners and walkers a great day at the Postnet Marathon on Sunday, and good luck to all members qualifying for Comrades and Two Oceans. The bus to the Postnet Marathon is now fully booked.

The next race will be the Durban marathon on 1 March in Durban. A reminder that all KZN 2015 running numbers will be returned to KZN Athletics at the end of February.

A NUMBER of the Toti AC’s junior athletes as well as a few seniors and masters competed in the KZN Athletics track and field league 4 event this past Saturday.

Despite the very windy conditions, a number of athletes improved their personal bests.

Juniors with good wins in their age groups included Tyrique Naidoo, Hlengiwe Zuma, Sesi Mbatha (first in two events), Rishen Archarey, Dwayne Trollip (first position in two events) and Lisha Van Onselen.

Masters Riaan Vosloo and Llewellyn Van Onselen also registered good wins in their age groups.
