Barflies fun at ABC

Note that the men’s inter-club league has been postponed.

THE second Barflies competition of 2015 was once again a howling success at Amanzimtoti Bowling Club (ABC) last weekend.

Two full greens of members and visitors played with gusto to the vibrant 70’s music of Alf Bingham.

The eventual winners were Dave Kemp, Stan Shawe, Boet Els and Lee Steenkamp. Second prize went to Barry Simpson, Ken Leech, Tilda van der Linde, and Andre Roux; and Gerald Chalder-Royle, Martin Young, Greg Veldsman and Dot Liebetrau came third. First session winners were Coy Schrauwen, George Taylor, Wylna Hertz and Brian Pascoe, while Heather Brown, Bobby Henderson, Bernie Bretherton and Brian Cox won the second session on a count out. Most bowls went to Gustav Somers, Stuart Pickles, Betty Sawyer and Gerald. Thanks go to sponsors, Jerry Gertzen of OR Cellars and Jerry Motley, and to Neil Oberholzer for the liquid refreshment on the greens. We hope to see everyone back again for the next ‘barflies’ which will be on Sunday, 1 March.

In more serious competitions, Peter Callaghan, Ian Mills and Andrew Walker defeated Colin Coetzee, Dave Kemp and Shawn Sutherland in a semi-final game of the nominated trips; and Robyn Hutton, Nicky Stirzaker and Lys McDonald won their game in the drawn trips against Elsie Walker, Betty Sawyer and Tokkie de Kock.

The potato trips log leaders after the second game are Ian Crouch, Lofty van Tonder and Marion Crouch. Bobby Stewart won the chocolate, and thanks go to John Allers for donating the potatoes last week.

Social member Greg Veldsman’s tab came up in the attendance draw at TGIF but he was not present, so the next draw will be for R150. Noreen Butler won the 100 board, and Ian Crouch’s number was drawn in the key game. However, there was no luck for Ian, and the prize rises to about R6,000 this week.

Note that the men’s inter-club league has been postponed. Players will be advised of the new starting date shortly. Birthday greetings for this week go to Betty Sawyer, Lynda Soden, Vince Phaal, Heather Brown and Carl van Heerden; and good health is wished for all members, especially those who are not well at the moment.
