AGC golfing men start hunt for league glory

This coming Saturday the men play their monthly mug while the women will compete in their KZNLGA medal and putts competition.

AMANZIMTOTI Golf Club’s (AGC) golfing year gets underway this coming weekend when all three men’s teams open their 2015 campaign for league glory.

The A side, once again playing in the premier division, are playing host to Southern Natal, and hopefully home course and home supporters will prove a huge advantage for our boys, and give them the edge against their opposition.

Bester Swart will captain this team, and his team-mates will be Sadeak Khader, Kalvin van Rensburg, Mark Cowie, Michael Dunlop, Sean Roberts, Jacques Nel and new member Nigel Jones. Team reserve is Mike Igesund.

The B side takes on Durban Golf Club B at Zimbali under the captaincy of John van der Spuy. The rest of the team is Faraan Khader, Mike Igesund, Jason Nel, Robert Roux, Matthew Hamer and Murray Dalton, with Gareth Lewis as their reserve player.

The Allerton league team will be captained by Peter Tiearney, with Willem van Deventer, Clive Fryer, Ronnie Nair, Jason Moriarty, Cecil Heydenrych, Peter Dalton and Tommy McNaughton making up the rest of the side. Their reserve is Eugene Mbambo. These men will play at Durban Country Club against Umhlali on Sunday.

Good luck to all three teams. It would be great to get some early wins under the belt at the outset of the season.

On Sunday our women’s section sends four teams to Scottburgh to contest in the South Coast Meet, an annual fourball alliance competition. After AGC’s teams have picked up the first four spots on the podium, the South Coast Region AGM takes place, which will see our own Brenda Morgan take over the mantle as president of the South Coast Region Golf Association, which is just reward for Brenda’s many years of service to the South Coast Region, and a huge honour for the club.

Back to the week just completed, on Wednesday the weekly midweek IPS competition was contested by a small field of 27 players, with Peter Oberholzer taking the win on 40 points, followed by Jason van Rensburg on 39 and Phelp Stevenson in third place with 38 points. The Friday nine hole sundowner competition was also a small affair, with only 24 players competing. Top spot went to Brian Stewart on 19 points, followed by Nico Vogel on 18 and Tommy McNaughton on 16 points.

On Saturday the men played a combined stableford format, and the youngsters led the field home, with Faraan Khader and Kalvin van Rensburg taking the honours on 76 points, albeit by virtue of a count out from Ronnie Nair and Clive Fryer. Third place went to Peter Tiearney and Hu Turnbull on 75, with Nic Brits and CVO in fourth on 74 points. Nearest the pins went to Colin Scorer and Ernie Benjamin on the 7th and 15th respectively. Faraan Khader picked up the jackpot, while the attendance prize was not won so it carries over to next weekend.

The women played ‘bingo, bango, bongo’, a highly entertaining format which rewards first on the green, closest to the pin, and first to hole out. As there was an odd number of players, the field was split into two divisions. Winner of the fourball division was Charmain Stone with 54 points, followed by Delene Berry on 52. The threeball division was won by Shelly Naylor, making a most successful return to golf, with Jackie Dunlop in second on 52 points. Nearest the pin on the fourth was Sue Daniels.

This coming Saturday the men play their monthly mug while the women will compete in their KZNLGA medal and putts competition.
