Baseball champ returns home victorious

Chase Wasserman is now looking forward to the World U18 baseball champs in Japan.

TOTI’s baseball champ, Chase Wasserman and his U17 SA squad returned home victorious after participating in the IBF All African Qualifiers Series in Kenya.

The tournament took place between 13 and 22 December, which saw the home team, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania battle it out for glory.

Chase, a pupil at the Durban School for the Hearing Impaired was the only Toti player of the 18-man squad. “SA won the tournament by beating Uganda 4 – 1 in the final to qualify to participate in the World U18 baseball champs in Japan in August.”

The teenager was in his element during the series. “It was a bit of a shock at first, as the team had to repair the fields prior to the tournament. But he thoroughly enjoyed it,” said his dad, Deon.
Chase’s baseball glory did not end in Kenya. While there he was invited to attend the Pole to Pole invitational tournament between the George Bull German Baseball Academy and the Baseball Academy in Cape Town.

He spent 13 days there and played in nine games. Chase was selected to an all-star team to play against the German academy in the final, which saw them win 16 – 9 and end the series 5 – 4 in favour of the Cape Town franchise.

He was also one of four players selected for an exchange programme to Germany. “While there he will participate at club level. But Chase will only take up this offer in 2016, as he will now concentrate on the upcoming world champs.”
Deon thanked all those who assisted with sponsorship for Chase’s trip to Kenya.
