Toti’s pint-sized motocross rider, Gareth Whyte was crowned champ in the Motorsport South Africa (MSA) 65cc class region championship and honoured at a dinner at Westville Country Club on Friday, 5 December for his outstanding achievement.

The Amanzimtoti Primary School pupil, who starts grade 5 next year, has been riding since 2011, and next year will race in the 85cc class.

“It was never my plan to win this year, so it was a nice feeling,” he said. “I got my new bike three weeks ago and I’m excited to race in the 85cc class.”

At a fun day in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday, 6 December, Gareth was presented with another brace of trophies for winning his class.

He also finished seventh in the MSA’s national series and seventh in the World Of Motorsport ZA (WOMZA) series this year.

The 11-year-old speedster is sponsored by Capital Outsourcing Group and trained by Devon Shea. The cost of his bi-weekly training sessions is covered by Steven Muraour.

Gareth also enjoys hockey and his competitive streak often surfaces in other sports.

“I would like to go professional one day,” he said. “I enjoy coming first. I think I will do well next season and I’m excited for it to start.”
