UGC’s R10,000 draw decided

The spirits were certainly high and everyone enjoyed a fun evening with partying late into the night.

WHAT an exciting weekend for Umkomaas Golf Club (UGC).

Not only was it the Christmas alliance organised by the women’s committee but it was also the R10,000 draw.

It was an honour having professional golfer, Tim Clark, to do the draw. Before all the festivities started, Tim encouraged the members to continue to support UGC and in particular congratulated Sonny Govender, club manager, for all his dedication in running the club. He also thanked Mike Powell, green keeper, for keeping the course in pristine condition and lastly, the committee members who have contributed their time and effort into the club.

Wednesday’s competition was individual stableford. Andy Davidge came in 1st place on a great score of 42 points. Welcome back Andy. Barry Taylor took second spot on 39, Neil Thompson third spot on 38 and Sue Boshoff on 37, counting out her hubby Peter Boshoff for fourth spot.

The weather really played its part for the big day. Well done to the women on a well organised Christmas alliance. Thank yous go to all the sponsors who helped made the day so special. Taking first place were Fred Welch, Mike Cromhout, Jimmy Spear and birthday boy Eric Morsner on 94 points, while second place went to the Sutcliffe family and K Naidoo on 91, and third spot to Barrie and Warren Taylor, George Mzimela and P Williams on 90. The prizes went all the way to 15th place, so well done to all the other prize winners. The nearest to the pins went to Barrie Taylor on the fourth, Matt Hamer on the ninth, Robbie Small on the 13th and Big Joe on the 17th. The longest drive was won by Johan Roux. The raffle draws were won by Simon van der Bosch who won the wicker picnic basket and Jennifer Dustan won the litre of Chivas Regal.

After prize giving the moment had arrived for the R10,000 draw. Tim Clark drew the 1st number for the 3rd place of R1,000 which went to Cathy Fraser, and then the ticket for 2nd place of R2,000 which went to Steven Botha. Finally Time drew the R10,000 ticket and the lucky winning ticket was won by Lynn Stander. Captain Peter phoned her and it is believed she was ‘one very happy lady!’. The fantastic evening was not complete as Tim Clark donated one of his tour golf bags to the golf club, which was auctioned off and finally claimed by Vesa for R7,000. The spirits were certainly high and everyone enjoyed a fun evening with partying late into the night. Also a worthy mention goes out to the band called ‘A Band with No Name’ who contributed to making the evening a success. Huge thanks go out to Umkomaas Spar who sponsored the platters of cheese and biscuits and the wine for the evening and then lastly, to all members who contributed and sold tickets for the draw.

This Wednesday sees the usual individual stableford played and next Saturday’s competition will be betterball stableford.

The club is hosting a New Year’s Eve party. It will be a social evening and there will be braais and braai packs available. To book your braai packs, contact the club for catering purposes.
