Experience wins in tussle with youth at ATBC lane record champs

After the first round of eight games, only 20 pins separated the first two men with Andrew Cyster leading from Ricky O’Hare and Theo Govender a further 22 pins behind and Brian Daventry-Bull a distant fourth over 50 pins in arrears.

THE tenpin bowling year is rapidly drawing to a close with all league bowling due to be completed by 30 November, so Dolphin Bowl hosted the ATBC lane record championships on Sunday, 16 November.

As the name suggests, this tournament is only open to bowlers of both genders who have bowled the highest games over the year on each lane.

Bowling is there fore on a ‘scratch’ basis, over eight games, and competition is intense as the result gives bragging rights for the following year.

Seven men and six women competed and from the word go, competition was intense. No laughing and joking was evident on the lanes as first one bowler and then another tried to break away from the field.

After the first round of eight games, only 20 pins separated the first two men with Andrew Cyster leading from Ricky O’Hare and Theo Govender a further 22 pins behind and Brian Daventry-Bull a distant fourth over 50 pins in arrears. For the women, youngster, Kimi Govender showed the more experienced (and older) bowlers a clean pair of heels, leading Bronwen Elbourne by 84 pins with Stacey-Lee Hooper in third, a further 40 behind and Rina Cyster in fourth.

At this point the tournament changed into knock out, step ladder, format with fourth playing third, the winner challenging second for the right to play in the final against first place. Stacey-Lee beat Rina after a roll off, having drawn the two games on 357 each. Stacey then played Bronwen who bowled a magnificent 408 to Stacey’s 331. The scene was then set for the final and it was a case of experience versus the exuberance of youth as coach Bronwen took on her protégé Kimi. Bronwen eventually ran out the winner by only three pins, 362 to 359.

In the men’s division, the step ladder saw Brian knocking Theo out and then challenging Ricky for the right to play against Andrew. Ricky was successful in this match and then moved on to the final. It appeared as if he had been holding back all morning as he turned on a prize-winning performance to oust Andrew by 449 to 327.

The 2014 champions are Bronwen and Ricky.
