Winkle SLC boasts six new lifeguards

Gary Barber will be back for training on Sunday and will focus on preparation for these exams.

WINKLESPRUIT Surf Lifesaving Club (SLC) has six new qualified lifeguards.

This past Sunday saw the six Junior Lifeguard Award (JLA) candidates wake up to cold and rainy weather for the upcoming exam, but as always, the show went on regardless of weather and their exams kicked off at 6.30am at Winkle beach.

The surf test was followed by theory being tested later in the clubhouse. All six – Michael and Bryce Land, Kegan Lloyd, Kaylin Techet, Kelly Fell and Brittney Luther – passed and are now proudly active members of the club. Congratulations to them as well as Gareth Hazell who was the instructor for this class. Thanks to Derek Fourie and Mabs Kruger, the LSA examiners on the day.

Owing to the shocking weather conditions, the nipper action was called off for the day. However, the catering team stuck around and cooked great food for the members present. A hot breakfast roll went down well in such conditions. A note to nipper parents that the nipper level exams are scheduled for Sunday, 16 November at Scottburgh High School. Make sure your children are doing the recommended swim training.

Gary Barber will be back for training on Sunday and will focus on preparation for these exams. Senior and junior competition training is in full swing and all competitors are required to be at the beach on Sunday at 8.30am with training kit.

The Currie Cup final was well attended at the club and again the big screen proved to be a blast. Paula Land introduced a little class by providing some potted plants for the new enclosed deck. Thanks Paula. On Friday night the club will host a Halloween party. All members and friends are invited to arrive dressed up and enjoy the proceedings.

This Saturday sees a work party building a new fence on the property, thanks to material kindly donated by Kevin Michaux. The action starts at 9am. Take along a cordless drill/screwdriver if you plan to assist. As the saying goes, many hands make light work.
