Sabiha flies UGC flag at San Lameer

The winner of the changed competition was Dave Mulroy on 37 points counting out Eric Morsner into second place also with 37 points.

IT would seem that the hole-in-one genie has been at work again.

Congratulations to Strand Striker, Trevor Osborne who had his very first hole-in-one on the par three ninth hole last Saturday morning at Umkomaas Golf Club (UGC).

The absolute delight expressed on getting his perfect tee shot was a sight to behold. Congratulations Trevor, savour the moment – it may not happen again for quite a while.

As mentioned in previous reports, Sabiha Bacaus was invited to play in the Pro Am down at San Lameer last week. She played with Amy Boulton, a professional golfer from Wales, which was certainly quite different from club golf.

Unfortunately the weather was atrocious and all the players were pulled off the course after four holes, only to resume after the worst of the rain had passed over. Sabiha played very well at San Lameer and hopefully that augurs well for Sun City, where she is playing in the finals of the Sanlam Cancer finals early this week. Well done, Sabiha for flying the UGC flag so high – everyone is enormously proud of your achievements.

Tim Clark played in the Shriners Hospital for Children Open at CordeValle Golf Club in California this week, shooting an -8 to finish T42. He was the only South African playing over the weekend, so well done to him. The winner was Ben Martin on -20. The next tournament on the schedule is the McGladrey Classic.

Both Wednesday and Saturday were individual stableford competitions, the usual for a Wednesday but because of inclement weather on Saturday, the competition was changed. Wednesday was a bit drizzly so a few players didn’t finish their rounds but the winner on 43 points was Roddy McGibbon with Fred Brandow in second place on 40 points. Taking the last place was Garth Wilyman on 39 points. It just goes to show that the Strand Strikers will play in any weather – no matter what the conditions are. Well done.

Saturday was another bad day weather-wise but the players who went out weren’t deterred at all. Visitors Renzo Avellini, Mike Harvard and Dennis Tubaro were all welcomed to the club at prize-giving. The winner of the changed competition was Dave Mulroy on 37 points counting out Eric Morsner into second place also with 37 points. Bruna Scarpa scooped up the third prize with 35 points counting out fellow Italian, Liv Mazzaro into fourth place.

Bryony Rogers nailed the jackpot with 10 points to her name but both the hidden birdie (17th hole) and the attendance draw (Warren Taylor) will be carried over to next week.

The women’s committee is to be congratulated on their sterling effort and hard work of putting together the Hey Days Tournament last Sunday with market stalls galore around the first tee box. The atmosphere was fantastic, all the stalls looked amazing, not to mention the American Scramble played during the morning. Thanks to everyone who participated – to Michelle who supplied the music all day and to the potjie ‘cookers’ for their contribution. Again, congratulations to the women on a job well done. The winners of the Scramble were Val Hazell, John Thompson, Claude Osborne and Steven Botha on 107 points with Steve and Leigh Beckerling, John Gillett and Alan Batholomew in second place on 100 points.

Next Saturday’s competition is the Widenham trophy individual stableford (first won in 1921) with social golf on Sunday.

Since the children are back at school, there will be KidzGolf on Saturday mornings starting at 8am. This is a wonderful opportunity for any youngsters interested in golf to go to the club. No equipment is needed, the club will lend you clubs if need be.

Six-pin is played on Friday afternoons from 2.30pm, a great way to de-stress after work.
