Bruce, Kuben claim Zimbo golf spoils at UGC

Next Saturday, 27 September is the fourball alliance - always popular, always a challenge. Sunday, 28 September is social golf but call the club for a tee time on 039-973-1042.

AFTER a week’s worth of top dressing, ‘verti-this’ and ‘verti-that’ plus a whole lot of other stuff such as cutting, trimming and generally tidying up of the greens, tee boxes and every other nook and cranny out there, Umkomaas Golf Course course is once again in superb condition, ready for another year of hacking, stomping and having clubs thrown at it.

Well done to Mike Powell and his team for getting the course back to rights in a week, ready for the onslaught of the weekend. The fruits of your labour is very much in evidence.

Since the course was closed last Wednesday due to spring treatment, there were no competitions but Wednesday, 24 September was the tombstone tournament – a sort of scary medal, the results of which will appear in next week’s newspaper.

The annual Zimbo Trophy, sponsored and organised by Peter and Sue Boshoff, was very well supported by all members and it was great to see so many visitors playing in this unusual competition, especially Peter Boshoff’s daughter Nicky and son-in-law, Murray Stocks from Johannesburg. All the visitors, too many to name, were welcomed at prize giving by club captain, Peter Toward. The weather turned out perfect as well and the winners of the Zimbo trophy for 2014 were Bruce Sutcliffe and Kuben Naidoo, combining very well, on 75 stupendous points with Tom and Viv Naicker in 2nd place with 68 points. Jimmy Spear and Derek Airey came in with 62 points to take 3rd place and in 4th spot was Lindani Mthiyane and Christopher Pillay with 60. The competition paid out prizes to 12th place – every prize well earned. There were also nearest the pin prizes and they went to Annette Gillett – 4th hole; Clyde Leisegang – 9th hole; Graham Coxell – 13th hole and Rob Mathias – 17th hole. Barrie Taylor counted out Bruce Sutcliffe in the best individual points score – both on 38 points and Bruna Scarpa (welcome back, Bru!) did it for the women with the best points score of 35. Well done to all golfers and congratulations to all winners – all of whom look forward to next year, to take up the challenge again.

The women’s section has an exciting ‘hey day golf tournament’ in store on Sunday, 19 October. Freshly grown produce and homemade ‘paraphernalia’ will be on sale as well as a potjie competition and a putting competition. The format for golf will be an American scramble. Tee off times are from 11am and the green fees will be R110 per person. This is a huge undertaking for the women and if you don’t play golf, there will be plenty going on for everyone.

Another fund raising effort is the R10,000 draw. Tickets are R100 each and the draw will take place on Saturday, 13 December, after the competition at prize giving. The tickets can be bought from members as well as the golf shop.
