Golf course maintenance paying off at AGC

The short cloudburst last Thursday also made a difference to the fairways, but the club still needs the rain.

THE good news from Amanzimtoti Golf Club (AGC) is that the hollow tining and top dressing have made a huge difference to the greens.

Playing on Saturday was an absolute pleasure and golfers can only look forward to even better putting conditions in future.

Well done to Errol and this team for their hard work. The short cloudburst last Thursday also made a difference to the fairways, but the club still needs the rain.

There is now less than a month to go before the KZN Womens Golf Association inter club kicks off, and over 300 women descend on Amanzimtoti, bringing most welcome revenue to town. The format for the competition is foursomes golf on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, interspersed with loads of entertainment and the rekindling of old friendships and forging of new ones.

Last Wednesday there were 30 players competing for the IPS meat, and Errol Woods took the honours on 43 points, counting out Dave Richardson to second place. In third spot was Einstein Botha on 40. The Friday afternoon nine hole sundowner competition was won by Michelangelo Goundy on 22 points, followed by Sylvester Chetty on 20, and Robert Roux was third on 17 points.

For the record this scribe would like to have a new rule put in place regarding scorecards: No full name of the card should result in a player being DQ’d. No exceptions.

On Saturday the women played a 4BBB hi-lo draw, and the competition for top spot was fierce. Jacqui Porrill and Wladzia Olivier won with a fine 47 points, closely followed by Jacky Dunlop and Gill Symons on 46. Cheryl Flutter was nearest the pin on the 7th hole, and Gill Symons won the two club money with a good putt on the 4th.

The men played a fourball alliance, and looking at the results, this must have been two scores to count on all the holes excepting the shorts where all fours scores counted. The winners on the day were Servaas van Niekerk, Wik van Wyk, Gert Vosser and Kingston Pieterse with 106 points. In second place was the team of Tommy McNaughton, Rob Symons, Les Brown and Perry Gengan on 105, and Paul Godleman, Theodore van Niekerk and their two spooks came in third on 103 points, winning the count out on that number. No results were supplied for either of the two nearest the pins, the jackpot carries over, and the attendance draw was won by Hu Turnbull.

Thanks go to Ted Holden and his helpers for their work in organising the Arbor Day tree planting, and many thanks also to all the members for their support of this important event. Over R1,000 was contributed by the players. Well done.
