ABC’s Julie and Amanda are Port Natal pairs champs

The AGM and annual prize-giving were well attended on Saturday.

JULIE Sutherland and Amanda Ninow started off Amanzimtoti Bowling Club’s new competition season well, after winning the Port Natal Pairs competition on Sunday at Durban Wanderers.

They had a good win in the morning against the Parkhill women, and went into the final against the formidable pair of Glenda Matthews and Gloria White of Durban.

It was a very tough match, but the Toti women stuck it out and emerged victorious. Well done, the club is proud of you both. This follows a very successful past year for the women players.

The AGM and annual prize-giving were well attended on Saturday. The committee remains largely unchanged with Alec Stirzaker returning unopposed for a third term as president, with the following changes: Dallas Davis is the new vice president, with Julie Sutherland becoming the women’s competition secretary, and Mike Groom and Margaret van Belkum are general committee members. The men’s selectors are Neville Roscoe, Greg McLeod, Glen Scorgie and Mike Groom; and the women’s selectors are Doreen Salmond, Barbara Beamson, Marion Crouch and Heather Brown.

Well done to Dave Lombard on becoming an honorary life member; and to Neil Harris (auditor), Babs Swart, Arthur Walker, Maureen van der Poel, Shirley Ann Joubert, Alan Smith who are honorary members, as well as Owen Turner in appreciation of his work as voluntary barman.

Congratulations to all the competition prize winners, especially to Jenny Greenslade and Mike Pitchers, most improved female and male bowlers; and to Tokkie de Kock who was the female bowler of the year, with Ian Crouch the male bowler of the year. Well done to Brian Crause and Talla Stephens-Viviers who were club members of the year.

In the women’s trips the winners were Marion Crouch, Kathy du Plooy and Val de Kok. Runners-up were Susan Erasmus, Denise Bingham and Elmarie Young; and the 2nd session went to Mardi Dovale, Amanda Ninow and Sue Blount.

In the men’s nominated 2-4-2, Ian Crouch and Lofty van Tonder were the winners; with Denny Denysschen and Ken Leech coming 2nd. Brian Crause and Kokkie de Kock won the 2nd session.

In the key draw, Jeanne Alexander’s number came out, but once again the key did not fit so the prize money goes up to about R6,000 this week. Talla’s tab was drawn in the member’s draw, but she was not present so next week’s draw is worth R300.

The winners of Big Chicks were Ian Crouch, Lofty van Tonder, Marion Crouch and Clive Frank. Runners- up were Clive Hambley, Duncan Wright, Meryl Hambley and Yvonne Wright; and in 3rd place were Noreen Butler, Dennis Hughes, Eric Klopper and Jeff van Belkum. Coy Schrauwen, Bobby Stewart and Maureen and Hennie van der Poel won the 1st session, while the 2nd session went to Herbert Hofmann, Keith Berry, Christine Darley and Kokkie de Kock. Most bowls went to Robbie Roberts, Steve Evenwel, Gladys Hughes and Brian Pascoe. Lucky 13th place went to Peter Barnes, Boet Els, Maxien Barnes and Karen Shepherd.

The 100 board winners were Shawn Sutherland, Lesley Stephens-Viviers and Robbie Roberts. Thanks as usual go to the generous sponsors of this competition, Jerry Gertzen, Gladys Hughes and Brian Pascoe.

Many happy returns go this week to Babs Swart, Joe Tetluk, Innocent Sithole, Johan van der Westhuizen and Nicky Stirzaker. Good health and good bowling to all members.
