Sheldon sinks win in Friday sundowner at AGC

On Saturday the women played a highly entertaining betterball double up format, and the results show just how well the girls played.

THERE was much excitement earlier this week when Amanzimtoti Golf Course (AGC) had a much needed bit of rain, but sadly the moment was brief, so it is back to doing rain dances if we are to see any respite from the dryness of the course.

It is great to see how well the greens are holding up though, and this is thanks to the hard work put in by Errol Woods and his team.

Last Wednesday the IPS competition attracted a decent field of 29 players, and the scores reflect how much run the players are getting, with Jimmy Corr taking the honours on 41 points, followed by Nico Vogel on 38, and in third place was Errol Woods with 37 points.

The Friday nine hole sundowner had the same number of players, and Sheldon Grant who does not habitually play on Fridays made the most of his outing to take the win on 22 points. Nico Vogel won the count out on 21 to take second spot.

On Saturday the women played a highly entertaining betterball double up format, and the results show just how well the girls played. Winners on the day were Ina de Boer and Cheryl Flutter on 75, counting out Delene Berry and Estelle Binnekade, and Gerda Heydenrych and Gill Symons took third spot on 74 points. Unfortunately AGC’s talents didn’t extend to the short holes, so there were no two clubs and none of the women even reached the 17th green in one.

The men played 4BBB bonus bogey, and Colin Scorer and Piet Carstens posted a fine +13, with Clive Hill and Craig Moriarty the nearest challengers on +11. The field then threw up a couple of +10 scores, with father and son combination Sakeak and Faraan Khader counting out Rob Wilson and Perry Gengan for third spot. The nearest the pins on the fourth and 15th were won by Mark Brodie and Clive Hill respectively, and Nic Brits was at prize-giving to collect the attendance draw money. The jackpot was not won so carries over to next week.

Players will have noticed the new bench that has been erected alongside the 16th tee box. This has been organised by Jebby Dyson and Sue Daniels, with contributions from many of the woman members, and has been put up in memory of late friend and fellow golfer Gerry Girven.

This coming Sunday several of the women will be competing in the South Coast regional championships taking place at Scottburgh. Best of luck to all the women, may your balls fly true and your first putts drop.

AGC is running a special for all visitors to the club. On Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 18 holes of golf including golf cart hire will cost R150 per player sharing. Contact the pro shop on 031-902-4144 to book.

Last chance, the club is holding an Elvis evening on Saturday, 16 August. Contact the club office on 031-902-1166 to book seats. This event promises to be an exceptional night of entertainment, so go along and join in the fun.
