Doreen places third in PN senior singles

Then, with regret, the club heard the news this week that Adrie Harmse lost her fight to cancer.

DESPITE the cold damp weather the finals of the Port Natal bowls singles played out at Amanzimtoti Bowls Club on Sunday, 6 July.

The club, which sponsored the event, is very proud of club member Doreen Salmond who played extremely well throughout to come third in the women’s senior singles competition. The winner of that section was Daphne Reinhardt of the Bluff.

In club competitions, Doreen Salmond scored another win in the handicap singles against Jane Coetzee; Val de Kok narrowly lost to Amanda Ninow; Barbara Beamson defeated Liz Morgan-Davies, and Nicky Stirzaker won her game against Denise Bingham. Doreen Salmond lost her open singles game to Jennifer Greenslade, and Jane Coetzee lost to Val de Kok. Lee Jordan succeeded in defeating Margaret van Belkum in novices, but then lost her next game to Gaythri Ramklass, while Jeff van Belkum beat Beni Chirkoot in the men’s novices.

The men’s drawn four’s competition kicked off at the weekend. Lofty van Tonder’s team of Clive Frank, Ian McDonald and Beni Chirkoot defeated Glen Scorgie’s team of Doug Joubert, Bobby Henderson and Kokkie de Kock; Greg McLeod’s team of Robbie Roberts, Owen Turner and Nelson Pati beat Ian Shearer’s team of Andrew Pearce, Alec Stirzaker and Al McGregor; Ian Crouch, Guelfo Cobianchi, Colin Coetzee and Boet Els lost to Duncan Wright, Ken Leech, Barry Buckland and Ben Venter; Gerald Chalder-Royle, Peter Barnes, Mike Pitchers and Jeff van Belkum lost to Don Saunders, Alf Bingham, Mike Roberts and Vish Studinski; and finally Coy Schrauwen, Neil Oberholzer, Trevor Dempsey and Shawn Sutherland lost to Peter Callaghan, Ian Mills, Peter Shepard and Dave McMillan.

Jane Coetzee and Denise Bingham were the winners of the monthly women’s 2-4-2, with Marion Crouch and Adrienne Robbins second. Barbara Beamson and Heather Brown won the second session prize, and Barbara Beamson also won the 100 board. In the men’s drawn 2-4-2 the winners were Ian Crouch and Shawn Sutherland with Glen Scorgie and Jeff van Belkum the runners-up. Second session went to Herbie Hofmann and Martin Young. In the men’s Scroungers the winner was Ian Mills, followed by Doug Joubert and Glen Scorgie. Plate A was won by Greg McLeod, and Plate B by Peter Callaghan.

On Sunday, 13 July will be the first round of club competition finals followed by a bring and braai, so if you’re not playing, go along and support the finalists and join in the celebrations afterwards. The finals to be played are: Women and men’s open singles, women’s drawn pairs and women’s drawn trips. So check the notice board for cardings.

Two birthday greetings this week go to Di Robinson and Ed Fourie. Hope you both enjoy your special day. Then, with regret, the club heard the news this week that Adrie Harmse lost her fight to cancer. Our condolences are sent to her family members and friends.
