Athletes show grit at cross-country league

Remember to were reflective gear when running in the early mornings and evenings.

THE sixth event in the 2014 KZN cross-country league was held on Saturday, 5 July at Lahee Park in Pinetown, hosted by PDAC.

The total number of athletes was down to 250 from the 350 athletes who took part in league five; the lower numbers was more than likely due to the school holidays.

The course was very demanding. This did not deter the seven junior and eight senior Toti Athletes who once again showed their ‘grit’ in producing some excellent results.

Girls U9: Second Maya Pretorius 14.02.74.

Girls U11: Second Emma Pretorius 17.13.36, third Meagan Tancrel 18.27.35.

Open men (short course): Fifth Nkululeko Mgenge 14.39.75, seventh Phekani Ndlovu 16.37.32.

Women age 45+: Third Judy Tancrel 22.31.00.

Women age 50+: Fourth Jolanda Broodryk 24.43.00. Youth boys age 17: Second Trevor Hlengwa 25.20.00, third Menzi 25.35.00, eighth Sphesihle Nxele 27.10.00. Men age 60+: First Devilliers Oberholzer 31.19.00, fourth Cecil Clarke 33.04.00.

Men age 40+: Third Xolani Nocanda 31.12.00. Men age 45+: Second Robert Gcanba 33.50.00.

The next event is scheduled for Saturday, 26 July hosted by Verulam AC and will be held at the UKZN sports grounds, Francois Road, Berea in Durban.

Reminder to all athletes that the Goss and Balfe South Coast Marathon takes place on 19 October. It’s a 21km run and walk and a 42km run. Pre-entry closes on 9 October, enter at entries@ https://eventiming.co.za/gossblafe

With the cold weather and end of Comrades training a lot of athletes are battling with motivation and trying to get back on the road. Athletes should now be working on speed. Go along and make use of the grass and cross country tracks at Lords and Legends. Athletes can do interval training or fartlek on the cross country track.

This Sunday’s race is the Supa Mama Savages half-marathon challenge and 10km run walk. Entries can still be taken on Saturday at an extra cost of R20. For more information, call Kevin Bradfield on 078-281-1698. Remember to wear reflective gear when running in the early mornings and evenings.
