Women’s matchplay golfing champs decided at AGC

Lynette Roodt in the morning round and in the afternoon round managed to squeak home against Estelle Binnekade on the second play-off hole, to book her spot in the final against Sue Boucher.

JACQUI Porrill and Sue Boucher are the 2014 matchplay champions for the silver and bronze divisions at Amanzimtoti Golf Club (AGC).

On Saturday the bronze players teed off early to start their attempt at capturing the title, and Sue was made to work very hard by Sue Conlan who held out until the 16th hole when she finally secured the win.

Sue Boucher then had a bye through to the Sunday final. Jacqui took care of Brenda Morgan in the semis on Saturday afternoon, while Charmain Stone sorted out Thanda Zama in fine style to book her place in the finals. Gill Symons saw off a good challenge by Lynette Roodt in the morning round and in the afternoon round managed to squeak home against Estelle Binnekade on the second play-off hole, to book her spot in the final against Sue Boucher.

On Sunday morning, the women set out to challenge for the matchplay honours, with Jacqui and Charmain going head to head on the first nine holes. After their halfway stop, Jacqui turned up the heat to win the next three holes on the trot, making birdie, birdie and par, which totally stunned Charmain. Their match was all over by the 15th hole, Jacqui winning 4/3. Sue Boucher had an easier ride, turning five up after nine holes, and a short-lived comeback by Gill just wasn’t good enough to repair the damage done. Sue took the win on the 15th hole, winning by a comfortable 5/3 margin. Congratulations to both champions.

The gremlins living inside the competition score sheet book are still running rampant, and both Wednesday’s and Friday’s results are MIA, so unfortunately no report today on those competitions.

On Saturday the men played a 4BBB bonus bogey, and the youngsters put the more seasoned players to the sword. Callum Haggie and Chris Tredoux took the honours with a fine +12, with Pat Vickers and Arthur Holland winning the count out on 11 to take second spot. In third place were Johan Vosser and Ben Viljoen, while Carl Fryer and Peter Tierney took fourth place on +10.

The two nearest the pins were won by Callum Haggie on the 4th and Mark Cowie on the 15th, all this while these two bring down the average age of the club’s members quite substantially. Good stuff guys.

Those women not involved in the matchplay competed in an IPS game, with new girl on the block Adri Slabbert celebrating joining Toti by winning the competition on 32 points and also picking up the nearest the pin on the 7th hole. In second spot was Jebby Dyson on 30.

The pub is looking amazing, and chairman Mike McGregor seems to have taken up residence in there, such is the amount of work he is putting into the final touch-ups to the renovations. As advised before, the official opening is scheduled for 12 July. Watch this column for more information regarding time and sequence of events.
