Gareth’s passion for riding takes him to the top

This win puts Gareth as the top racer in his class in KZN.

Toti rider, Gareth Whyte, a grade 4 pupil at Amanzimtoti Primary School, took first place at the Pietermaritzburg regionals in the 65cc class on Sunday, 22 July.

This win puts Gareth as the top racer in his class in KZN.

The 10-year-old speedster races in Motorsport SA’s MXSA national series, as well as in the World of Motorsport SA (WOMSA) races.

He is currently 10th out of 21 riders in the WOMSA series and eighth out of 19 in the nationals.

“I like racing because it’s hard,” he said. “My hero is my dad and he also races. I started racing when I was only four-years-old.”

Gareth is sponsored by Capital Outsourcing and receives kit from Fox.

He is the only rider in his class who hasn’t had any official training. “I learn from the older Toti riders who I’m friends with.

I want to carry on racing,” said Gareth, whose first word, according to his mother Lee-Ann, was ‘bike’. “I practise nearly every weekend at Springfield.”

The only other sport he plays is hockey, but it is racing motorbikes that this young rider lives to do.
