Knock-out edges fighter closer to title

Debut at EFC Africa looms.

Cameron Meintjes only needed two rounds to knock his opponent out and with it, have a shot at the Africa Fight League (AFL) middleweight title.

The 21-year-old CombatCoaching.com fighter, who has been fighting for five years, knocked out Andile Sosiba at the University of KZN sports hall on Friday, 25 April to record his fifth victory in nine bouts.

“I was ecstatic and extremely grateful,” said Cameron of his latest victory. “No fight is ever easy, but I train with the best so I was always in control. I started fighting to learn how to defend myself and to lose weight.”

Cameron is now hard at work for his AFL middleweight title fight, which should take place in June or July. There is a strong possibility it will be held at the Toti civic centre.

Winning with a TKO has given him more confidence heading into a title fight. “Finishing an opponent always gives your confidence a boost.”

He is equally excited about fighting in front of his home crowd. “It’s easier to put on a good show when you have big support behind you.”

If successful, Cameron will then go ahead and make his debut at EFC Africa in August at the Durban ICC.

“My EFC debut is my main goal and always on my mind, but I have to win this title before I can get there, so this fight is my main focus right now.

I believe I am ready to step up into the ‘big leagues’, but the decision of when I do lies with my coach, Morne Swanepoel as he knows what’s best.

He always makes sure my training is intense and at the highest level and I’m always being pushed to my best. Under his continued coaching I learn every day, not just about being the best fighter I can be, but also being the best person I can be.

I thank him, my team and God, as without them I wouldn’t be able to do what I do, and to my family and friends for their continued love and support.”
