Women’s day arrives at UGC

Don't forget it's bingo time again on the 2 May.

AT last women’s day has arrived at Umkomaas Golf Club (UGC) and if you haven’t booked a time, it is now too late.

After much planning and organisation, the mixed alliance will come to fruition on Thursday, 1 May.

Hopefully the weather will be superb. More news on the women’s day in next week’s report.

Good luck to all the guys playing in the Allerton League next weekend at Umkomaas – home course advantage has never been so good.

Wednesday started out as wet and soggy but the weather cleared during the late morning and the individual stableford competition proceeded as normal. Claude Osborne was given a warm UGC welcome, as always. There was no official prize giving, unfortunately not too many players but well done to all for sticking it out for the rest of the afternoon.

On Saturday, 26 April, was the long-awaited Weiss VW fourball alliance. It was a very successful day, just a pity some of the players went home early. Peter Toward welcomed the many visitors to the club and competition, before handing over to Jos Matthysen to do the honours. Congratulations to Jeff Govender, Saga Reddy, Nelson Moonsamy and Leven Chetty on taking the first prize by ‘the skin of their teeth’ on 90 points, counting out Brian Daventry-Bull, Hans Beuthe, Wally Kent and Ken Harding into second place. In third slot was woman captain, Bryony Rogers and hubby, Adrian together with Sabiha Bacaus and Michelle van der Westhuizen, who scored an unbelievable 15 individual points, with a fine 88 points. Taking fourth place and counting out a slew of teams behind them, were Cedric Kruger, Dudley Pringle, Johnny Coetzee and Piet Vermaak on 87 points. In fifth place was club captain, Peter Toward, Keith Vergottini, Alan Eriksen and Derek Cowden also on 87 points. Well done to the teams who also had 87 points. It just goes to show that the competition in these fourball alliances is hard-earned and fought for. Nearest the pins were won by Annette Gillett fourth; Ken Harding ninth; Jos Matthysen 13th and Bryony Rogers 17th. Congratulations to all the winners and UGC thanks all members and visitors for their continued support.

Don’t forget it’s bingo time again on 2 May. Call Annette Gillett on 082-927-5013 or contact the club on 039-973-1042 for catering purposes. Meals are on offer at a cost of R40.

Next Saturday is the Halfway Malanda monthly medal with Allerton League on Sunday. There will be social golf for visitors at certain times during the day. Call the club to book your time.
