Stirzakers through to Oppenheimer semis

News just received is that Greg McLeod has been selected to play in the Port Natal men's qualifying masters.

AMANZIMTOTI Bowling Club hummed with activity on Sunday, when the remaining 16 teams from around the district faced off in the fiercely contested Oppenheimer mixed pairs inter-club competition.

The club’s pride was carried forward when its two teams both won their first game. Sadly, Doreen Salmond and Eric Klopper were defeated by very worthy opponents in the second game, but Alec and Nicky Stirzaker won a hard battle to get into the semi-final on Sunday, 4 April.

In another exciting game, Bruce Makkink and Glenda Matthews of Westville picked up an ‘eight’, a rare achievement in this levels of bowls, against Kerry Gilder and Leonie Koedyk of Durban, and went on to win this close game. Well done to all teams for providing such exciting bowls and good luck to the Stirzakers for next week.

In the nominated mixed pairs competition, Greg McLeod and Marion Crouch maintained their lead to the end, despite a strong come-back from Ray and Di Robinson in the latter part of the game. John and Delysia Mitchley won their close game against Heather Brown and Carl van Heerden, while Don Saunders and Jeanne Alexander lost to Micky Roche and Michelle Pitchers. Jerry Gertzen and Talla Viviers-Stevens, one of the club’s newest bowlers, won against Terry Morgan and Lyn Joubert.

Five games of women’s handicap singles were played, in which Liz Morgan-Davies beat Marie van der Walt; Marion Crouch won against Jean Snyman; Gayle Windrim lost to Amanda Ninow; Maggie Robertson was defeated by Jenny Delport. Lesley Viviers-Stevens, also a very new bowler, lost to Heather Brown but put up a very good effort.

News just received is that Greg McLeod has been selected to play in the Port Natal men’s qualifying masters. This is great news, and well deserved. The club wishes Greg all the best, and good bowling.

In other women’s results, five senior singles games were played. In the game between Doreen Salmond and Liz Morgan-Davies, Doreen was chasing Liz’s lead and finally closed the gap to peel on the second last end. However, in a nail-biting finish Liz pulled ahead again on the last end with three shots to win the game in well-deserved fashion. Maggie Robertson had a convincing win over Gaythree Ramklass; Denise Bingham defeated Linda McGregor; Christine Darley lost to Barbara Beamson; and Val de Kok had a strong win over Maxien Barnes. In an open singles game Maxien Barnes lost to Jenny Greenslade while Robyn Hutton and Val de Kok won their nominated pairs game against Liz Morgan-Davies and Lyn Joubert.

The winners of the mixed 2-4-2 held on Friday, 25 April were Ian and Marion Crouch on a +23, and the runners-up were Doug Joubert and Heather Brown. First session prize winners were Glen Scorgie and Jane Coetzee, and the second session winners were Dave Kemp and Jacqui Fouché. The draw was won by Vince Phaal. Well done to Liz Morgan-Davies and Mickey Roche who picked up an ‘eight’ in the second session.

In the men’s league, the first division lost 2-5; second division lost 3-4; third division won 4-3; fifth division lost 2-3; sixth division E lost 2-3; sixth division F won 5-0, and eighth division lost 0-5.

The member of the month award was announced at TGIF on Friday, and was shared by the club’s two scribes, Linda McGregor and Jacqui Fouché for their contribution in writing the weekly report for the Sun.

Stella Erasmus was not at TGIF, and was therefore not able to win the cash when her name was called in the attendance draw. The prize therefore goes up to R200 next week. Marion Crouch won the 100 board, Al McGregor won the meat, and Vince Marriott and Bobby Henderson each won wine.

Cardings are up on the board for various games, including the women’s drawn trips semi-final and the women’s open singles for this coming weekend. Check carefully to see when your games are scheduled. Don’t forget to contact your competition secretary to arrange a rink if you plan to play any other games. Men’s Scroungers will play on Friday, 2 May and the final two games of the Oppenheimer will be played at the club on Sunday, 4 May.

Finally, several teams will be going down to the Margate competition next week, so play well and enjoy the games.

Birthday greetings for this week go to Denise Ingram, Shirley-Ann Joubert, Michael Burns, Steve Anderson, Nelson Pati and Mike Groom. Any members who are sick are wished a speedy return to health.
