Freedom Marathon wraps up Comrades runners’ prep work

Members of the public are invited to join Run Walk For Life on any of training their days, but you are urged to wear either a reflective bib or bright coloured clothing.

EVEN with the cold spell and winter settling in, this week’s Run Walk For Life (RWFL) Toti training as well as the Saturday long run were well attended.

At 5.30am on Sunday morning, the Comrades runners were on the starting line of the tough Chatsworth Freedom 52km.

They were joined by the rest of the RWFL team walkers and runners doing the 25km. The weather was cool – perfect weather for running and walking.

Both races started together. The 25km group started finishing with surprising results, as most members improved their times and all of them completed the race well within the race cut-off time. The 52km runners started coming in, with Shaun Finn being the first male runner home and Sphiwe Dludla the first woman runner (third in her age category). All the runners improved their times, with Lizette Botha shaving a remarkable 28 minutes off her previous best time. Well done to all these runners and walkers in both races showing that regular, hard training and dedication really pays off.

Now that the Comrades group have done their last long run, shorter distances are on the cards for May. Take your multivitamins, stay clear of illness and injuries until the big day dawns. For the rest, it’s training as usual.

The public is invited to join RWFL on any of their training but are urged to wear either a reflective bib or brightly coloured clothing.

Training days are Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 5pm at Amanzimtoti High School.
