Kemp shrugs off rain to win individual stableford golf

Good luck to both Garth and Tim for their tournaments next week.

THIS week, both Umkomaas Golf Club (UGC) ‘boys’ are playing in tournaments on opposite sides of the world.

Garth Mulroy did very well at the Maybank Malaysian Open, being played in Kuala Lumpur last weekend. He had rounds of 71, 68, 69, and 72 to finish on -8 in 10th place. If Garth plays again next weekend, it will more than likely be in the Volvo China Open. It will be broadcast in the early hours of the morning so quite a few fans are going to be rather tired going to work that week.

Tim, on the other hand, played in the States this week at the RBC Heritage tournament in South Carolina. Making the cut was the main objective, which he did, and finished on +1, tied at 38th place. After his disappointment at Augusta the week before last, making the cut was paramount in South Carolina. Hopefully, Tim’s UGC mates walked the four days with him at the RBC Heritage and who knows, Tim may be playing in New Orleans next week.

Good luck to both Garth and Tim for their tournaments next week, your legion of fans back home are behind you both, every step of the way.

Wednesday welcomed Claude Osborne to the individual stableford competition, in what turned out to be a miserable, rainy afternoon. There were players who relished that kind of weather, albeit wet and definitely cooler than over the past few months. Dave Kemp shrugged off the rainy bits to go on to win with 40 excellent points. Andy Davidge took home the second prize on 36 points, counting out Fred Welch into third place.

After the grim conditions of Wednesday, Saturday was an ideal April day for all our golfers, sun out with a slight breeze. Once again, our friend from Maritzburg, Gary Marquis-Jones and Corrine Penn-Sawers were welcomed to the club along with Tyler Naidoo by club captain, Peter Toward. It was good to see Paddy Sutcliffe down for the Easter weekend with nephew, Marc van Wijk playing in the 4BBB stableford. The winning team of Sean Prendergast and Ken Harding counted out Wally Kent and Ken Koster into second spot, both teams on 46 points. In third place were Sue and Peter Boshoff on 43 points, counting out Anil Sewpershad and Erika Ruaro into fourth place, also on 43 points.

Annette Thorold won the jackpot with 10 points but the hidden birdie on the 18th hole and the attendance draw will be carried over. There were three 2-Clubs to be had – Tyler Naidoo fourth, Hans Beuthe ninth and Kuben Naidoo 13th.

A sight never seen before at UGC was a family day of note with a 10-hole competition for the moms and dads and a ‘jumping castle’, putting compo, an Easter Egg hunt, popcorn and all sorts of goodies for the whole family. It was a successful day, thanks to the organisers Keith and Soraya Smith, son Cameron who provided the music and all who contributed in some small way. The club thanks you all.

One of our more vocal members, Eric Morsner, suffered a mild, although scary, heart attack a couple of weeks ago. A message from all at UGC – get your butt back on the course – pronto, Mr Morsner. Seriously though, get well soon Eric, your presence is missed.

Don’t forget to book your time for the women’s open mixed alliance, happening on Thursday, 1 May. UGC’s women’s alliance is open to all the men as well and promises to be a great day for all. Tee times are from 8am with limited carts available. Contact 039-973-1042 or call Bryony on 073-510-1052.

The sardine run is about six weeks away. Hopefully everyone has registered teams or will do so soon. Payment can be made at the end of the month but no later than the end of May. Registration is online at www.sardinegolf.co.za

The club’s website has been updated with a link to the Sardine Run.
