RWFL athletes qualify for ultra marathons

All RWFL Toti's members who entered Two Oceans and Comrades have qualified.

THE Run Walk for Life (RWFL) Comrades and Two Oceans training group is doing well with its training, with only a few, minor injuries reported.

It seems to be a good year for RWFL Toti’s ultra runners.

On Sunday the members travelled to Verulam for the last Two Oceans qualifier. They participated in the 10km, 21.1km and 42 .2km events. Madeleine Opperman did her first 10km in a brilliant time, while Francesca Shacklady did a personal best also in the 10km event. In the 21.1km race, Justin Willemse and Val Opperman did well while Reginald Groves performed well in the walk.

The 42.2km race was dominated by RWFL with Lizette Botha being first in her age group and Edmund Luiz coming third in his age group. To top it all, Shaun Finn walked away with the lucky draw prize of R1,000 for completing the race in a Gaterite sponsored T-shirt. Well done to all athletes who entered and completed their events.

All RWFL Toti’s members who entered Two Oceans and Comrades have qualified. This is thanks to their dedication and hard work. Well done.

The Cansa relay date has been postponed, and the club will advise when a new date has been set. Athletes can still put their names down to participate in this prestigious event. For more details, contact Jan Botha on 082-290-4025.

Lizette Botha will still run for Cansa by doing the full 12 hours, so the public can support her by sponsoring her per hour, lap or round or with a donation. Call Jan for details.

The public is invited to join RWFL on its training runs, but athletes must wear either a reflective bib or bright coloured clothing

Members are reminded that training days are Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 5pm at Amanzimtoti High School.

This Sunday’s race is the Dick King 21.1km run and 15km walk, starting at 6am from Amanzimtoti main beach area. For more information, contact Desmond van der Merwe on 082-806-0348.
