Linda, Maxien in ding-dong battle at Toti BC

The lead changed hands three times before Maxien came from behind to win in the last four ends.

SPECTATORS were treated to a real ding-dong battle when Linda McGregor played Maxien Barnes in the women’s open singles at Toti BC on Saturday.

The lead changed hands three times before Maxien came from behind to win in the last four ends. Well done to both players on such a good game.

Neil Oberholzer and Brian Crause beat Chris Whitlock and Tom Corrigall in the men’s nominated pairs, while in the men’s drawn pairs Gustav Somers and Peter Barnes succumbed to Andy Walker and Neil Wiggill. In a third round game of the women’s drawn pairs, Julie Sutherland and Jacqui Fouché had a convincing win against Jeanne Alexander and Maggie Robertson.

The club’s three women (Barbara Beamson, Doreen Salmond and Elsie Walker) returned from inter-districts with mixed fortunes. Lady Luck did not shine down on them this year, with no medals won. Better luck next year, but well done on representing your District and keeping the Toti flag flying high.

Several members of Toti BC were playing away in the Underberg Fives Tournament. The most successful team was that of Ian Crouch, Greg McLeod, John Winkler, Mike Groom and Steve Anderson, who were second overall.

96 members enjoyed the monthly Big Chicks competition last Sunday morning, with loads of prizes up for grabs. First prize went to Brad Cox, Paul Steele, Mike Roberts and Sharon de Kock. Heather and Les Brown, Bobby Henderson and Lys McDonald came in second, with Lourens Roos, a visitor from the Battlefields, Julie Sutherland and Ray and Di Robinson in third place. The prize for 13th place went to Clive Frank, Liz Morgan-Davies, Shane Tocher and Denise Bingham. First session prize was won by Willem Pelser, Jenny Delport and Alec and Nicky Stirzaker, while the second session was won by Pam Chalder-Royle, Leonie Mills, Brian Crause and Shawn Sutherland. The consolation prize for most bowls went to Pete Shepard, Lee Jordan, Brian Cox and Tony Darley. The 100’s board winner was Robyn Hutton, and runners up were Gladys Hughes and Maggie Robertson. A big thank you was extended to sponsors Gladys Hughes, Brian Pascoe and Jerry Gertzen for the many prizes that make the game such fun.

This was definitely Brad Cox’s lucky weekend, because in addition to winning first prize at Big Chicks, he won both the meat and wine draw at TGIF. The Cox family fridge must now be quite full. Leonie Mills won the second bottle of wine. Tab 84 was drawn for the attendance prize, but as Peter Labuschagne was not present, the roll over for next week will be R550.

Pete Shepard and Brenda Mulligan celebrate birthdays this week, so enjoy them, and remember, you’re only as old as you feel, so keep on playing bowls and you’ll feel young and sprightly.

Members involved in competitions are asked to check the notice board urgently for fixtures and to arrange their games on the public holiday, Friday, 21 March if at all possible. However, it is essential to confirm green space first. For the women’s drawn fours, D Salmond’s team will play L Morgan-Davies’ team on Friday morning, 21 March. Winners of this game will play Marion Crouch’s team on Saturday afternoon, 22 March. The men’s Saturday league is also playing on 22 March and the men’s mid-week league on 26 March. On Friday, 28 March Toti BC will be the venue for the SPCA bingo night. Share in the fun for a good cause.

Lastly, condolences are sent to club secretary Jackie Holdrick on the death of her father, Fred Holdrick of the UK, who was known to many members through his support of the concerts.
