Toti Hockey ace makes SA

SHELLEY FREYER has been selected to the South African women’s indoor hockey team.

The former Amanzimtoti High School pupil who plays for Collegians Raiders was one of four player from the KZN team to be selected for the SA indoor team. “I’m so excited to have been chosen, this is something I’ve always dreamed of,” said Shelley.

The SA team selections were made at the recent inter-provincial tournament played in Durban from 27 February to 1 March. Shelley received the news of her selection on Friday, 7 March that she was one of the 12 selected players. “I feel very honoured and blessed to play for my country. I’ve put a lot of hours in which has made a big difference,” said Shelley.

The 25-year-old hockey star first made KZN playing U16 and has made KZN every year thereafter. She also made the SA U21 outdoor hockey team in 2006. Shelley attributes her success to support from family. Shelley’s parents Carl and Wendy have always been supportive of her. “This is most wonderful thing that has happened, Shelley really deserves this because she has worked so hard for it,” said Wendy.

Shelley cites SA women’s hockey team captain Marsha Marescia. “Marsha is a brilliant player, she is really humble and I look up to her,” said Shelley.

Hockey World Cup qualifiers take place in Namibia from 7 to 14 April and Shelley hopes to be a part of SA’s world cup success. “If South Africa beats Namibia then we’ll go to Germany next year – I’d love to be there,” said Shelley.
