Golfers pull out big sticks ahead of club champs

The women competed in their annual Basil Smuts trophy event.

THE annual Amanzimtoti Golf Club championships are only a few weeks away, and it is rewarding to see the number of golfers spending time in the afternoons working on their skills, chipping, putting and occasionally bringing out the big sticks to work on their longer games.

This bodes well for the weekend of 22 and 23 March. If you still haven’t booked your spot in this year’s champs, do so as soon as possible.

Following the championship weekend is the matchplay play-offs scheduled to take place over the two days. Both the men and women will be competing in their respective events on those days.

On Sunday, 16 March the club hosts its league fundraising competition with good company, good golf hopefully and a braai to finish off the day on a high note. Phone the pro shop on 031-9021166031-9021166 to book your spot and show your support for the men’s league teams.

Results from the week saw only 27 players compete in the IPS on Wednesday, with Chris Opperman leading the field home on a fine 42 points. He was followed by Johan Roux on 41 and club manager Dave Richardson in third place on 40 points.

Friday’s field was a bit bigger, with 35 players competing for the meat. Winning on the day was Paddy Naidoo with 22 points, followed by Pat Fowler on 21, and Lucy Pienaar beat Mav Mavundla into fourth spot on 19 points by virtue of a count out.

On Saturday the men played a fourball alliance, with two scores to count all round, excepting on the shorts when all scores counted. The team of Servaas van Niekerk, Gert Vosser, Tom McNaughton and A Otto showed their talent by taking the honours with 111 points. In second spot was the team of Ben Viljoen, Ernie Crots, Ferdie Petzer and Wik van Wyk on 107, and taking third spot were Sagren Reddy, Rakesh Naidoo, Mervyn Naidoo and Sadeak Khader on 106 points. The nearest the pins on the 7th and 17th holes respectively went to Mike Cockerell and Mike Halse. The attendance prize and jackpot prize both carry over to next week.

The women competed in their annual Basil Smuts trophy event, a better ball, hi-lo handicap draw, which allows for the compulsory merging of the high handicaps and low handicaps. This is a most rewarding format.

Clear winners on the day were the pairing of Delene Berry and Wladzia Olivier with 48 points, followed by Jacqui Porrill and Sue Conlan on 43 points. Wladzia took nearest the pin on the 4th hole, and Sue Daniels picked up two-clubs on both the 4th and 15th holes.

A reminder that the list is up on the notice board for the matchplay knockout tournament and there are only six spots left, so put your name down soonest to ensure you are in with a chance.

Amanzimtoti GC welcomes all visitors to play a round of golf on its beautiful course. Phone the pro shop to book a tee off time.
