Toti AC youth make their mark in track and field league season opener

Its official the Scottburgh 21km has been cancelled for Sunday, 19 January has been replaced with the Kearsney 21km.

AMANZIMTOTI Athletics Club’s chairman and committee welcome all athletes back after a short break in December.

A reminder to all members to collect their 2014 KZN licenses on Wednesday from 5pm from Belinda at Lords and Legends.

Senior subs are R340 and juniors subs are R115. New club vests are available at a cost of R150.

The members basically get subs back as the club sponsors the dinner, members receive food and refreshments at the three club champs and athletes who make KZN team receive tracksuits and kit, tea and biscuits served on a Saturday morning. Amanzimtoti Athletics Club offers road running, cross country and track and field.

Training is every weekday afternoon from 4.45pm at Hutchison Park. Well done to Karen Sebrino on achieving great results in the Dopey challenge, which was a 5km, 10km, half marathon and marathon. She was first in her age group for the 10km, and third in her age group for the half marathon. In the marathon, she managed 3:20:31 and came 26th out of the women, second in her age group and 245 overall out of 24,296.

Cecil Clark looks after the senior athletes every Tuesday from 5pm at Lords and Legends. He has designed a programme to work on strength, speed and stamina.

With only 139 days to go for the 2014 Comrades down run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, athletes will now be focusing on longer club runs and qualifying for the event.

A group of 20 plus Toti AC members had a great 26km long run, leaving Lords through to Karridene and then back through Lower Illovo, with the challenging Illovo mill hill. The members now have a fair idea that they have to work hard on fitness and endurance. Thanks to Hennie, Belinda and Fiona for supplying the drinks. It was great to see all the members in their Toti AC vests, pounding the roads again.

The club tent and trailer will be there in support of athletes at the PDAC 25km run on Sunday, 26 January and the Sparksport 32km on Sunday, 2 February. The club will not be represented at the Kearsney Striders 21km on Sunday, 19 January.

There will be a 30km training run on Saturday, leaving Lords at 5am sharp. Athletes are to wear club kit and black shorts. Drinks will be supplied.

The club appeals to all members who are purchasing new running shoes and gear to donate their old pairs to the club, which will distribute them to needy members who require them.

On Saturday there is a long run at 5am with club kit and on Sunday, a long run with Cecil from 6am at Toti High School. The first KZNA track and field league event took place on Saturday, 11 January at Kings Park.

Toti AC’s athletes performed well in the season opener, although the majority will only set foot on the track this coming Saturday. Wikus Herbst was the pick of the athletes, with a well run second place 800m (2:02) and he won the 1,500m (4:39) for youth boys. Other results include Riaan Vosloo (winning masters 35 years 400m hurdles), Innocent Cele (fourth 800m youth boys), Sipho Hlongwa (fifth 800m and sixth 200m youth boys), Ciya Mgenge (sixth senior men 800m and fourth in 1,500m), The second sub-youth (14/15 years), youth (16/17 years), junior (18/19 years), senior and masters track and field event will take place on Saturday, 18 January at Kings Park athletics stadium.
