South Coast surfers stand out at Umhlanga surf fest

LOCALS surfers held their own at the Umhlanga Lizzard Nature Valley Surf Fest was held at Umhlanga’s Main Beach on Saturday and Sunday, 7 and December.

The event was the opener of the 2013 Umhlanga Summer Carnival festivities saw local surfers hold their own at the contest.

Held in two to three foot contestable waves with slight north easterly winds, surfers were able to really turn on their performances and win the many prizes on offer.

Stand-out surfer of the event was Sarah Baum of Warner Beach who not only won the U20 girls division, but also the open women's division. Sarah won R2,500 cash from Nature Valley plus a holiday in Mozambique from the Mets Family valued at a further R5,000.

She also won products from Lizzy, Hurricane, Rudy’s Repair Kit, Nature Valley and a further R1,000 cash from Hurricane for the ‘blowing up’ award – this is given to the surfer who is the stand-out at the event.

Other locals who had a good weekend are Lizzy surfer Chanelle Botha who won the U16 girls division, and Simo Mkhize of Umzumbe who came second in the U16 boys division. Heidi Palmboom of the Bluff placed second in the U20 girls and Heather Clarke of Port Shepstone placed second in the open women's division.

The masters men had two Toti locals in the line-up – Frankie Oberholzer came second, winning R1,500 from Varsity College and Gary Van Wierengen won R250 cash plus other prizes.
