Gale force winds a breeze for golfer

Mike Halse obviously didn’t get the memo about the negative effects of strong wind on golf-balls.

THE field contesting the Amanzimtoti Golf Club monthly mug was rather impressive this past weekend, and considering the ghastly conditions in which the competition was played, the results were more than impressive.

Mike Halse obviously didn’t get the memo about the negative effects of strong wind on golf balls, and duly went out and shot a gross 75 nett 63 off his 12 handicap to blow the rest of the B division away.

For his efforts Mike won the best nett of the day prize.

'Steady Eddy' Sadeak Khader won the A division with 73 nett 71 which comes as no surprise given his great form of late, and the C division was also fine in superb style by Servaas van Niekerk with a 95 nett 69.

Runners-up in each division were Ian Bender on 84 nett 75, Peter Tiearney OCO with a gross 79 nett 69, and Wade Burgess on 92 nett 75.

The nearest the pin on the fourth was won by Cecil Heydenrych and Nic Brits picked up the equivalent on the 17th hole.

The jackpot will carry over to next week as will the attendance prize, as Chopper Holland had already left the clubhouse when the draw took place.

The women also played their KZNLGA Medal and Putts, with Charmain Stone taking the honours in the silver division with 73 nett, and the runner-up was Gerda Heydenrych on 78 nett. The bronze division was won by Cheryl Flutter on 79 nett, with Sue Boucher picking up the second spot on 83 nett. There were three women sharing the least putts prize, namely Charmain Stone, Gerda Heydenrych and Delene Berry, who all only needed 30 putts on the day. Nearest the pin and the only two club made during the women's competition went to Jacqui Porrill on the 17th hole.

On Wednesday there were 40 players who took part in the IPS competition, and making the course look exceptionally easy was Jorgie Jorgensen on 44 points, followed by Terry Cousins on 43, with a visitor B Bosch picking up third place on 38 points oco.

The Friday sundowner meat competition drew 64 players, and the points were good. Rakesh Haluman made a welcome return to AGC’s fairways and took home the top prize with his 22 points off nine holes. In second and third were M Khumalo and T Langa on 21 points, and Selvesen Govender took fourth spot on 20 points oco.

Put your full names on the scorecards so the scribe can sing your praises in the Sun, unless you are ducking and diving from work and would rather remain anonymous.

A reminder, the women's AGM takes place this coming Saturday at 10am in the lounge at the club. All members are urged to attend.

The main club AGM is scheduled for Monday, 25 November at 5.30pm, also in the lounge, and it would be good to have a full contingent of members present to support the club.

Visitors are always welcome, contact the pro shop to book a time on 031-902-1166.
