Bronze for Toti bodyboarder

TOTI bodyboarder, Meagen Nell claimed a bronze medal in the women's category at the South African championships held in Mossel Bay from 22 to 27 September.

Having competed in a number of trials at the beginning of the year, Meagan was initially not chosen. “They only chose one girl, unfortunately she was injured and the team captain invited me to join,” she said.

Being her first time at SA’s, she was a little nervous. “The place was unfamiliar, but I kept my confidence levels up. It was a nice surprise to place third,” she said.

A grade 10 pupil at Toti High School, Meagan first took to the water on a nipper board. Her interest grew and she started borrowing friends’ boards to gain experience. “I became serious and competitive about the sport in the middle of 2012.”

Meagan ideally would like to be a mermaid. “I am 110 % into bodyboarding. I spend as much time as possible in the water. I am at the beach, even if it is raining. If I could, I would be there everyday. In the water you get to experience the beauty of the ocean.”

A sports enthusiast, Meagan also enjoys swimming, waterpolo, netball and athletics. “Sport keeps me motivated and healthy.” She thanked her sponsors, including her dad, Mark who helped her attend the champs.
