Oil slick

A HOLE in one of the holds of an oil tanker was the cause of the oil slick off Isipingo and Athlone Park.

Crude oil poured from a hole in a tank and bubbled to the surface. A slick developed, stretching for kilometres parallel to the coast line. Alarmed residents of Athlone Park contacted the SUN to find out what had caused the spill.

Divers were immediately dispatched to the tanker and the hole was plugged temporarily while the punctured tank was emptied.

Tom moans about mould

ATHLONE Park resident, Tom Corrigal is concerned about the level of air pollution in the suburb.

Corrigal and several other residents have been experiencing problems with textiles such as towels. The Corrigal family towels have been affected by a type of black mould that eventually eats holes in the fabric.

Corrigal has been monitoring the situation for over 18 months and has concluded that the mould is not caused by dampness.

They still need cash

CONTROVERSY surrounds the trip of three firemen and a volunteer to compete against medical teams in a competition overseas.

The SUN was told favouritism had been applied when it came to choosing the team members and that money raised for the trip was being abused. “Not, so,” said Chris Botha, one of the team members going on tour.

The other two members are Aileen Roberts, a critical care assistant and Stewart Masson. The fourth members is Chris’ wife Lynn, who will be handling all the administration for the team overseas.

Community policing has a good start

COMMUNITY Policing at Toti ended the year on a high note and began the new year on an even higher note by taking delivery of a new vehicle sponsored by Prospecton businesses.

“The success of community policing relies on the participation of the community at large,” said Cpt Anton Booysen. Community policing plans to take a very visible role. A display will be held over Easter.

They will combine forces with the Publicity Association for an exhibition on Marine Day.
