Humans are the horror, not monkeys

Before you "complain" about the monkeys, maybe you should take into account the fact that these are wild animals who are losing their habitat.

EDITOR – In response to the letter published in last week’s Sun edition under the headline ‘Start neutering monkeys’, there are monkeys everywhere, not just in your garden.

It is very convenient for everyone to view them as a nuisance, but they forget that monkeys were here first.

The trees they used to live in and forage in for food were cut down and replaced by your home. For some monkeys, the avocado tree in your garden is their only source of food.

The larger monkeys protect the troop. My dog has never been growled at or snarled at by the larger monkeys. But then, my dog doesn’t bark or threaten them in any way. As for your comment that monkeys will soon take over, like one sees in the horror movies, I doubt you have considered the fact that to these monkeys, humans are the horror.

Neutering them (really?) – there are monkeys all over KZN. Are you personally going to finance the huge and expensive undertaking of medical staff and equipment required to subdue and neuter the monkeys?

As for your suggestion of opening a ‘Monkey World’, where would this enclosure be built, and who would pay for it? Perhaps you can explain how all of the monkeys would be rounded up and placed in this ‘Monkey World’. Will you be volunteering your time to clean this enclosure and feed the monkeys? What happens to monkeys still left in the wild?

Before you ‘complain’ about the monkeys, maybe you should take into account the fact that these wild animals are losing their habitat.

Humans have managed to wipe out huge populations of indigenous species in the name of progress.

Will these poor monkeys be next?
