Crime is killing us, says murdered businessman’s family

Our value system is in dire need of being revised, acknowledging the people who are contributing positively and ridding the community of the criminals.

EDITOR – On Monday, 19 June, my nephew was shot in the Prospecton business district of Amanzimtoti.

We have witnessed all the good times in this area and also the decline into crime when weekly, there are accounts of wanton crime in our streets.

I do not ask where are the police, as they are attempting to deal with an untenable rise in crime. I ask where is the governance and accountability of the authorities who fail to come up with solutions. This young man was self-employed, offering employment to people who now will have no employment. The family now has no father, and his mother has lost a beloved son all for a matter of money.

We as a family have offered our best to a country that we feel is our home. However this loyalty is being sorely tested as we witness the lack of commitment from the decision-makers who are supposed to be governing our country.

We bluff ourselves that things will get better while the authorities fail to account to the public to whom they are responsible.

The people in power issue statements on TV assuring us that they are doing something, while is is painfully obvious that they have no idea of the meaning of the words they use in an attempt to reassure the public. All they are doing is feathering their own nests while the situation spirals out of control.

Citizens who are giving their best to keep the country moving forward are slowly being eroded and destroyed by the very people they are attempting to assist. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you. Instead of valuing the contribution being made by businessmen who offer the country some stability, the criminals are allowed to perpetrate these heinous crimes and get away with light or no sentencing at all.

Our value system is in dire need of being revised, so as to acknowledge the people who contribute positively and rid the community of the criminals. Not the reverse, which seems to be the case at present. I am devastated by the loss of a family member, by the dire straits we find ourselves in due to the rise in unacceptable crime and by the lack of commitment from the people who we are supposed to have faith in.

A SHOCKED AND SADDENED MEMBER OF THE COMMUNITY
