Tow trucker’s ‘visit’ leaves a bad taste

Imagine my surprise when I returned home to suddenly find a tow truck van parked in my driveway, the occupant politely handing over his business card to my brother through the gate.

EDITOR – I had cause to visit Amanzimtoti police station recently to report the matter of my car being found without tyres one morning, while it was parked overnight in my gated yard.

As an aside, and a cautionary note to other residents, I might add that this calamity occurred despite the presence my very large breed dogs.

While the policeman politely questioned why I hadn’t called them to the scene, and I replied that I doubted they’d have the resources to attend, this was not the reason for my irritation that day.

Besides the obvious discomfort and frustration of having your mag rims and brand new tyres stolen, I was also left with a bad taste in my mouth on my return home.

I live in a cul de sac which is quite remote, quiet and does not attract a lot of traffic. Imagine my surprise when I returned home to suddenly find a tow truck van parked in my driveway, the occupant politely handing over his business card to my brother through the gate.

I find it more than suspicious and downright ridiculous that before I had time to get back to my residence after leaving the police station, a tow trucker had supposedly found his way there ‘by chance’. Implausible and improbable. I was left with two thoughts – he either had a police bandwidth radio in his tow truck which he used to scan for leads and perhaps overheard the call to the police van with my address, or he was tipped off by a policeman at the station charge office.

I view either action deplorable and an indication of the malaise that afflicts our society. People are so eager to get ahead that they simply don’t care which laws they transgress or which shortcuts they take.
