SPCA urges owners to keep pets calm

Amanzimtoti SPCA is selling a herbal calming tablet for pets.

EDITOR – It is at this time of year that many members of our community celebrate the ‘Bringing in of the Light’.

These festivities focus around the use of fireworks.

Thank goodness we no longer have those awful ‘bangs’ that sounded like a bomb going off. I remember years ago, a neighbour kept a dog in a cage. It was horrific.

On Diwali, they then proceeded to let off the bomb fireworks right on top of the dog’s cage. To say that I went hysterical is an understatement. I had a six-day-old baby at the time and the walls of our wood-and-iron house were shaking.

Amanzimtoti SPCA is selling a herbal calming tablet for pets. These tablets can be ordered and will be delivered to the Amanzimtoti SPCA on Thursday. Give one tablet for every 10kg of animal for three days prior to the event.

The cost is R10 per tablet. You can purchase these tablets from Heather and Zakhona at the SPCA reception in Athlone Park. They are herbal based and build up in their calming effect over a few days.

Remember to put your dog in a room with dimmed lights and curtains closed. Put on the TV or a radio. And if your dog is kept outside, put it in the garage with a nice, warm blanket and the radio playing.

If you are celebrating Diwali this year, try and encourage the purchase of beautiful lights rather than loud bangs. And for those who do not follow Diwali, it is just a few hours out of your life. Take the above precautions and ensure your pet feels safe.
