South Coast roads need urgent attention

The general condition of all the South Coast roads starting as far as Umkomaas up to the splits of the N2 highways near Durban are far from acceptable.

EDITOR – I hope this letter can be published, as I am going to continue complaining and find out more about where to take this issue further.

I speak for myself and I believe many other residents of the South Coast who are affected by the volume of traffic which has increased over the past year, which is causing heavy congestion on our roads.

I’m outraged that the sinkhole located at the N2 Adams Road off-ramp remains untouched as far as repairs goes, weeks after it appeared during the heavy storms. Are we not paying road levies for such events?

The general condition of all the South Coast roads starting as far as Umkomaas up to the splits of the N2 highways near Durban are far from acceptable. I observe that there are no night-time lights on the highway and there simply are not enough lanes. There are traffic standstills from Seadoone and out of Amanzimtoti towards Durban where people are commuting daily to and from work, from as far as Port Shepstone into the Durban area.

This includes heavy trucks and other vehicles alike, all squashing onto the small two-way sections of the roads in many areas in and around Amanzimtoti and the N2 highway outside of Amanzimtoti.

The recent rains have worsened the existing holes and bumps in the roads and these are now a lot worse, to my own unfortunate expense as I have suffered two air pockets in my tyres as a result of this. I am sure there are many people experiencing the same problems.

The inter-leading road at the three-way intersection at Moss Kolnick, to and from the highway to Galleria Mall is a mess and they keep filling the holes but what about re-tarring it? That road is a main throughway and it’s very busy at all times of the day.

The North Coast roads are being upgraded, so when are they starting with the South? We need highway lights, more lanes and a huge improvement on the maintenance.

I live in Umkomaas and work in Jacobs, my two daughters go to school in Toti so I drive on the highway every day between Umkomaas and Jacobs.
