EDITOR – The photo and story on page 3 last week about the sardines and red hot pokers refers.
Attached is a lovely photo of red hot pokers growing on top of the Sani Pass in the Drakensberg mountains.
They are also known as torch lily (Kniphofia) or vuurpyl in Afrikaans.
The photo that was published is in fact the indigenous, stately dune aloe (Aloe Thraskii). This aloe is only found from north of Durban to Port Shepstone.
The aloe grows in pure sand on vegetated dunes.
It is such a beautiful aloe which we should adopt it as the emblem of the Sapphire Coast.
