Librarians lack commitment to their calling

I have heard that Kingsburgh library is to extend its premises. This, I am sure, will be a good move and welcomed by the staff.

EDITOR – I fully agree with ‘Disappointed Bookworm’ whose letter appeared in the South Coast Sun of 11 February.

It must be clearly obvious to all users of Kingsburgh library that things are not what they should be.

On occasions when visiting the library, I have noted as many as half-a-dozen ‘assistants’ seated behind the counter. Loud conversation among them continues non-stop, as well as irritating incoming cell phone message alerts. Are all these women library employees? Or is it open house to anyone who may happen to drop in for a social chit-chat and catch up on all the news? This would not be accepted in any other working environment.

What has happened to the code of silence in libraries? Perhaps it would be a good idea to introduce a dress code or uniform for the librarians and any other person employed at the library, as they used to have, to deter persons gathering behind the counter and keeping the staff from doing what they are employed to do.

In addition, the wooden circular stand displaying ‘special collection’ books has been pushed into an inaccessible corner of the library to make way for a computer workstation of all things, placed in the main traffic area. This makes it very difficult for readers to browse through these books, most of which I might add have not been changed in months. Only occasionally do one or two new books appear on this stand.

As far as the matter of litter surrounding the library and eating in the library is concerned, this I think is something where the head librarian should assert her authority and address as a matter of urgency. It is totally unacceptable.

I have heard that Kingsburgh library is to extend its premises. This, I am sure, will be a good move and welcomed by the staff. However, it is an attitude of consideration and commitment to one’s employment which is of paramount issue here. Let us return to having a sense of pride in all aspects of our library.
