Residents have a right to protection from illegal occupation

If the council cannot help, could someone point us in the right direction to have this eyesore of a problem sorted out and keep our neighbourhood safe?

EDITOR – In response to the article on page 10 of the South Coast Sun dated 13 November by Roy Palframan and the response by Mr Beetge, I would like to add my view that as tax and ratepayers, we have a right to be protected from vagrants and illegal occupation of properties in our area.

The municipality, which has a vested interest in terms of the money owed, should attempt to attach and sell this property to recoup costs outstanding. This also ensures that residents living in the area are protected by ensuring that the neighborhood is properly maintained by owners or legal renters and not illegal occupants.

The response from the councillor deviates from the fact that we need action to be taken. Stating that there are thousands of households without amenities has no bearing on the subject. The fact that there is no sanitation, water or electricity makes this problem worse from a health and safety perspective.

Stating that the illegal occupants are cleaning the property does not help the neighbourhood. Let’s not forget that this is a residential suburb and the needs of the ratepaying community needs to be attended to by the local council.

If the council cannot help, could someone point us in the right direction to have this eyesore of a problem sorted out and keep our neighbourhood safe?
