Query delivery costs

The only cost that matters is the cost when it is in your home.

EDITOR – When buying a piece of furniture I suggest people ask how much will it cost to have it delivered, before they decide.

We have found huge variation in delivery costs which impacts significantly on the true cost of the item. Recently we had a double bed delivered from Durban, free delivery. Delivery of garden furniture from Cape town was R450, which was reasonable. We ordered an ottoman from Galleria and were quoted R500, which is exorbitant for local delivery. Fortunately we were in a position to say deliver to the store and we will collect. The delivery cost is never advertised (unless free), and is often only mentioned at the end of the transaction. Buyers beware.
