Road law-breakers endanger everyone

There have been several serious accidents on Kingsway between Inyoni Rocks Drive and central Toti.

EDITOR – On Saturday, 18 January my partner and I were less than a tenth of a second away from death, because of two law-breaking drivers.

Travelling north behind a taxi a few metres before the Inyoni Rocks/Kingsway intersection, the taxi slammed on brakes to pick up a fare.

Having right of way, with two lanes northbound, I changed lanes to overtake the taxi. At the same a speeding red BMW travelling south crossed the solid barrier line to overtake a slower car going south. A millisecond reaction on my part saved us both from a head-on collision. The driver in the red BMW took no evasive action and seemed totally unaware he was endangering all our lives by his wrongful actions.

There have been several serious accidents on Kingsway between Inyoni Rocks Drive and central Toti, often because taxis suddenly stop anywhere illegally to load passengers. It seems there are no enforceable laws against this practice. Kingsway taxi ranking may never end but maybe the answer is brighter double barrier lines – or better still a concrete island to prevent motorists simply crossing into oncoming traffic to overtake. One motorist in a red BMW and his passenger/s should be thanking the Lord that they are still alive today, just as I have done.
