* OWNERS of the Poseidon Restaurant on Toti beachfront were asked to give Toti Council a firm commitment to a R832,000 plan to build two small cinemas, a games room and a revamped restaurant in the Poseidon complex. This guarantee will have to be forthcoming before the council gives further consideration to the project.

* A COSTLY underground irrigation system at Hutchison Park is to be lifted because it has never worked since it was laid more than five years ago. The system costing R60,000 was plagued with problems from the start and it is possible it is now ruined. At the last meeting of the council it was resolved that an investigation be carried out by the Health Department to determine the cost of digging up the system and the estimated value of the pipes, pumps and switches if it is retrieved.

* AN INVESTIGATION into a bus service between Amanzimtoti and Durban has been shelved, pending the formation of a regional service council for this area. Toti Council decided against continuing with the investigation, at a cost of R44,000, because it was felt that such a bus service was an issue pertinent to a regional service council.

* A SOUP kitchen is to be set up at the Catholic Church in Riverside Road, Amanzimtoti. The soup kitchen will be for children who have been left homeless or who are too afraid to go back to their homes after the recent unrest in neighbouring townships.

* THE FATE of the debt-ridden Amanzimtoti Central Sports Club is to be resolved once and for all after the October 26 municipal elections. The club is three months in arrears with its rental and also has a loan debt with the municipality in excess of R30,000. Matters came to a head recently when the town treasurer reported rental arrears to council. Chairman of the club, Eddie Cousens abandoned the AGM because the treasurer could not produce the books.

* THE GENERAL municipal elections are only days away now and candidates in Amanzimtoti and Kingsburgh are busy concluding their election campaigns. The involvement of politics in the local elections is greater in Amanzimtoti than in Kingsburgh, with 10 of the 16 Toti candidates standing under either the Conservative Party or National Party banner.
