* THE SAICCOR factory polluted the Umkomaas River last Saturday and factory personnel blamed the rain at the time.
According to an environmental officer from Saiccor, Ted Beesley, the spill into the river happened during repairs to the lining of the effluent channel. During the floods, the plastic lining of the effluent channel was ‘ripped out’ in places, and contractors were repairing the damage. To enable them to replace the torn lining, it had to be suspended above the channel.

* A SCOTTBURGH man was found dead in his car in the garage of his Adams Street home on Tuesday, afternoon.
Derek Hoffman (31) was found by his wife Cindy. He leaves his wife and two children. Police say foul play is not suspected.

* THE Doonside Flat Owners Liaison Committee has petitioned the Kingsburgh Municipal treasurer because flat owners have to bear the brunt of rate increases for developed properties in the borough.
The petition contained 381 signatures and was sparked off by a press release given to the Sun by Mr Wright, in which he gave examples of how the rates affected different categories of developed properties.

* THE battle for local council seats on the Upper South Coast is hotting up and the CP onslaught is mounting with only days to go to the Monday, September 5 nomination day.
The CP announced last week that it was to fight at least 13 of the 18 seats in Amanzimtoti and Kingsburgh, and it has now been reported to the SUN that the CP intends contesting all nine seats in Scottburgh.

* THE foundation of an Amanzimtoti Publicity Association was laid at a meeting in the Mayor’s parlour on Tuesday night. A steering committee of four has been formed to lay the ground work for the formation of the association. They are George Hardenberg, Brad Reen, Barry Garner and deputy town clerk Neil Schwegman.

* SIX cars were stolen from the Hyperama parking lot during August. The vehicles were all passenger vehicles and were stolen on various days at different times during the day. Despite increasing police patrols in the area, and despite the vigilance of the Hyperama’s own security guards, vehicle thefts are continuing.
* WARNER beach peeping toms beware -those bronzed, young surfers who think that they are onto a good thing by peeping at the girls who are showering through carefully constructed peep-holes in the roof of the changerooms, should be aware that people are onto them.
