Fish hook found near Warners rock pool

Impact the hooks and wire could have on the birds and animals that frequent the beach

EDITOR – We found a fishing hook in the sand near the rock pool on Warner Beach. In addition we found about three other hooks as well as fishing gut in among the rocks adjacent to the pool. My nine-year-old grandson found this hook and my six-year-old granddaughter found the other ones.

They were playing in that area and building sand castles and digging in the sand – can you imagine what horrific injuries they could have suffered if that hook had become embedded in their tiny hands. Not to mention the impact the hooks and wire could have on the birds and animals that frequent the beach. The fishermen who use this area need a good slap over the head and a hefty fine to wake them up. The impact that their lack of responsibility could have on other users of the beach, especially children and wildlife, is seriously dangerous.

The children could not even paddle in the little rock pools because of the numerous fish heads that had been disposed of in the water.

Perhaps this could also become part of the Parks Board’s function to check and take action against these gormless individuals? My apologies to the fishermen who are not guilty in this regard, but to those of you who are, I hope that you will be good target practise for the next couple of seagulls who come along.
